That Bristol Rovers millstone

by Jerry St Clair » 01 Jan 2007 19:13

Am I right in thinking that, finally, we have matched Bristol Rovers record of holding the highest score at the Madejski, set back in January 1999?

Always really bugged me that an away team held the stadium record.

Before today!

Yes.

I think the last time we scored six was the 6-4 at Exeter under McGhee

The first time I have ever seen Reading score 6 goals in a competitive game, and I can hardly be classed a newbie! Fantastic stuff, well done lads.

For the stattos among us: Who was the last side we beat by 6 clear goals?

I'm guessing, but my first thought is the 7-0 demolition of Barnsley at EP - end of December 1979, I think.

PNE? Feb 1990? I can recall begging my dad to take me but we couldn't go, sadly a ten year Floyd old probably couldn't be trusted to take 2 buses across the other side of town! I was pleased but also disappointed in some ways listening to Steve Beddow bringing the good news on 210!

That saw Alan Clarke take his players down a coal mine so that they could see what real work was like!

Wonder what the East End equivalent is!

That's the one - also Clarke's last match as a player - he hung up his boots after that one.

But I think floyd__streete is right - it was PNE in 1990.

Not bad for someone spotted crossing the road at the CostCo roundabout at 5.15 looking like a drowned rat.

it was indeed Preston. We were 4-0 up at half time in that one too.

Oddly I've seen Reading score 6 five times now (today, Exeter (a) 6-4, Torquay 6-1, Preston 6-0, Swansea (a) 6-1), and in 4 of them we had 4 at half time.

I think Trevor Senior ended up in goal by the end of that Torquay game?

Gawd - I said on another post I'd never seen us score 6. But I was at that Barnsley game. How could I forget that? Seniliyt setting in....

Still, I'm not sure Barnsley were as bad as WHU today.

That's not my recollection.

Shortly afterwards in the last match of the season we played Wigan, drew 2-2 (?) and Trev finished in goal and was chaired from the field of play at the end.

But not against Torqs.

No.

Justin Fashanu scored Torquay's goal in the 6-1 defeat, he'd only just been outed IIRC.

yep i was there....great goal from Jimmy Quinn, the fifth i think....4-1 up at half time and cruising, then exeter rallied and scored 3 goals...but the mighty royals stepped up a gear and scored twice more late to win. good game, good day out, awful ground

Of course, you're correct. We handed out a couple of spankings towards the end of that season iirc.

That day was so cold I tried wrapping my feet in plastic bags in the vain hope it would help retain a little more warmth.

Certainly the coldest match I have been too.

I was at the 6-1 away victory at Swansea; hilarious game cos ever time we attacked, we scored!

:D

This season, i expected games like the ones against Blackburn and Bolton, where we got outplayed, and even expected games like Arsenal, where we were outclassed. I even expected games like Sheff Utd were we outfought a rival......but I never in my wildest dreams expected us to so utterly humiliate anybody at this level as we did yesterday.
