Targets of the Boo boys....

by Thaumagurist* » 16 Jul 2008 15:56

Personally, I think booing of any Reading players is disgusting and full backing should be given to the players in the blue and white hoops whatever their football ability is. I imagine encouragement is preferable to abuse. Anyway, can we list the targets of the terrible boo boys and see if they were actually shit?

So far I can think of:

Seol (Plenty of skill, perceived to be lazy, buggered off to be closer to the Korean community)
John Oster (Reasonable skill, but slow and old)
Andy Hughes (Bags of energy, reasonable skills but kept running out of position)
Darren Caskey (Just because of the price tag and his "weight" - great player, loads of goals, how can anyone boo him?)
Keith Jones (Possibly too old, but experienced back up to the first team, did his part when he came on. Unfairly booed)
Anthony Rougier (Fantastic player, why boo him? Just because he accidently scored an own goal not of his own fault in a crucial game)
John Salako (Why?)
Carl Asaba (Why? Scores goals, possibly couldn't head the ball, but if he can score goals, who cared? Or was it the price tag?)
Colin Gordon (Crap player, but scored some goals....)

I'm sure you can come up with a few more.

Nicky Shorey.

I seem to remember the Salako hate started after he went a whole match, only touching the ball once, in about the 60th minute.

Brooker... or is this only players who were unfairly targetted.

Goater, Owusu the list is endless, because you can usually find someone who doesn't think much of our best players, let alone our less good ones.

The bloke who sits next to me has always hated Harper, I don't think he's ever actually booed him though. What about Simon Sheppard?

I was always too scared to think anything but fear when he had the ball.

if our fans had their way, our players would put 100% in and not be of any other skin colour other than white

If a player doesn't play very well and I say so on here, does that mean I hate him? Should I pretend that a player has no flaws simply because of the shirt he wears? All of the players listed had their weaknesses.

I think, for the most part, there's a reason why players get targetted. Usually it is because we have seen that they could be good, and that they didn't perform that well for the most part or were perceived to be lazy.

I've said it before and I'll say it again that shouting "boooooooo" sounds absolutely moronic and is the behaviour of a simpleton or a Pantomime-goer. That said I have no real problem with anyone uttering a few expletives or slating one of our players if the mood takes them. Folk have, after all, paid for the privilege of watching them 'perform' and we shouldn't flatter ourselves to think that any of our players give a damn what you or I think of them as they count their substantial pay packet at the end of every week.

Poor young Malcolm Swain was booed to within an inch of his life. Modern players targeted by Mad stad plastics are living the life of Riley by comparison. I save my booing for Royal Lady leaving her seat in the 44th minute heading for her ciggie and Chardonnay fix. Tis a bloody disgrace I tell thee!

Reading fans don't properly boo their players like other clubs. At most, there may be a small section (including myself) who make some sort of half-hearted attempt during the team announcements to show their disgust that a player that has been given chance after chance has been selected again. Agree with Papereyes that these players are not the ones short of ability but the ones short of commitment/effort (I disagree with the use of the word "perceived"). Hughes - lots of shaking of the arms but backed out of tackles (except when he played full-back but then he had no choice but to tackle in that position); Asaba - lazy (League Cup Q/Final Vs M'brough...cf Kits); Oster - lack of commitment (e.g. not chasing back - I know too classy  but if it's good enough for Ronaldo, Rooney, etc...).
We can forgive lack of ability (although we ridicule that) but not effort/commitment. Never criticise someone when they've tried their best, that's my motto (that I sometimes stick to).
