Richi Royal ...has a team reached the the final or semi finals and been relegated in the same season?

Middlesborough reached the final of both the FA Cup and League Cup and were relegated from the Premiership in 1997.

And that was completely their own fault as they were docked 3 points for their no-show at Blackburn.

Depends who we are playing in the final (it might be against one of my other teams)

Cup. Of course.
Were I a Pompey fan, I might even grudgingly accept potential administration / expulsion and a journey back up the leagues in exchange for having had that day.
On the balance of things though I'm happier supporting a club that tries to live within its means and has a cup run whilst flirting with relegation.

Win the Cup. I've backed us to be relegated so my profit would pay for my cup final ticket and then I could catch up on all the grounds in League 1 I need to tick off 8)

CMRoyal
LUX those with all this "you know nothing about football" posts, surely you experts recognise that the FA Cup is a sideshow nowadays. I could name every Cup final from the 70s and 80s, but have to think hard to remember who holds it now. In fact I do not know who the holders are. Chelsea?

That's age.

Ask younger people about the post-80s stuff - they'll know.

Not entirely sure, it is more of a side show now in general. If a team like us won it though - that would be remembered. Same as Pompey in 2008. When it's just Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool winning it; that's when they all start bleeding into one.

I accept I'm in the minority on this one, fair enough (and obviously I'd be scrounging around on here for a Final ticket) but where are the "stay up" posters on this thread? One in three have voted this way. But only Slammed and I have dared express our feelings.

Let's not forget that winning the cup would also get us into Europe.

windjammer Pompey won the FA CUP 2 years ago but what are they remembered for now? If we can stay up our young team, with a bit of experienced loan help, can be mid to upper half next season, maybe playoffs the season after. Use common sense, staying up must be the prority

Yeah and even if they go into administration and get relegated, in 10 years they could be back in the Prem no problems.

Same goes for us, we'll have a better chance to get promoted again every season for the next 10 years (which is no time at all) than we're likely to have of beating another big 4 team in the FA Cup and getting to the final.

Relegation is temporary, winning a cup is forever.

Going down and being in Europe would be hilarious.

Well I want to win it and stay up!

If forced to choose I'd have to go with staying up as I suspect relegation coinciding with the end of parachute payments, in current financial climate, might well prove disastrous for the club.

I'd like to see Pompey win it, get a place in Europe and then go bust. Watch the various governing bodies try and sort that out.

How about Pompey win it, beating us in the final. Go bust and get wound up partially due to illegal / fraudulent finances. Get stripped of the trophy, which is awarded to us and the European place goes to us as well, despite us being relegated.

Oh, and they only beat us (2-1) thanks to two extremely dodgy and suspect goals. Just so we can claim that we should have won it anyway.
