Compo's Hat Reason i wanted to see it was because that was my first ever RFC game and i didn't really understand the beautiful game properly at the age of 10.

Is that so different to where you find yourself at the age of 25? 8)

Jack Celliers Should MacAteer have been sent off when he gave away the penalty?
I don't think the law has changed since then.

Yes. Already booked and a definite yellow for chopping down Gilksey. Had he gone it surely would have been game over.

I know so many Reading fans who can't watch this!

I made a point of watching it, more than a little bit pissed, after we won promotion at Leicester. CLOSURE.

Went through all that pain again.

Two points. I didn't realise Owen Coyle scored that day or that Scotty Taylor played so well.
Without doubt the worst day in my life as far as watching Reading FC is concerned.

Watched this for first time in years last night,

other than the pen, didn't we miss some glorious chances!
but main thing was how poor our defending was - no pressure on the ball in midfield, no pressure on crosses, three quality centre-backs unable to pick up a forward, easily out-jumped and eased off the ball.

think our 2009/10 defence would have coped much better, even under BR!

I recorded this yesterday and watched last night. I had to turn off when the penalty was awarded, almost in tears, i went to bed.

Re: The defending. The team was shattered by the second half. We put so much effort into playing an expansive attacking game in the first against what was a very good, physically fit Bolton side. We knew we had to attack them otherwise they would attack us. We did so admirably but it just wasn't enough, although it should have been with the penalty.

Completely agree Mcateer should have been sent off and we would have won if it had. He was amazing in the second half/extra time. His best ever game no doubt - drove them on.

What an amazing game. What an effort. So close but no cigar.

Not that I'm bitter - BUT YOU@VE MISSED THE POINT !!

He'd already been booked - it was a clear yellow and should have gone.
Would've made all the difference.

I was 7 years old and probably playing cops and robbers. Therefore I have no further comment about the whole day.

Reassuring.

Worst day of my Reading supporting life. I genuinely believed that was our only chance of Priemership football. I didn't talk to anyone for a couple of days afterwards.

Sounds abit like the villa game this season!

I watched it for the first time and couldn't believe how good the play was in the first half from us

I watched the Bolton game for the first time and I can honestly see the parallels with the Villa game. We play really well from kick off, go in 2-0 up. We come out second half second best and we don't know what's hit us. Then the rape ensues.

We were outstanding in that first-half and really should have had it all sewn up by half-time. I just knew though that if Bolton scored they would go on and win it. Bad bad day.

The phrase scarred for life springs to mind, the football that had been played that season was sublime, the expectation of getting into the Premiership for the first time ever from rusty Elm Park was building.. then total heartbreak.

As much as promotion to the premier was a lifetimes achievement...the pain from 95 strangely still lives on
and I will never watch that replay

I don't think I've ever seen anyone on here give Bolton a hand for the way they came back that day. They were very good as well.

Was a wonderful day, very sad it ended that way.

Just watched it again on ESPN. 2 things I had forgotton

1. Archie missed a really good chance just before half time when Stubbs back headed the ball into his path - Branigan came rushing out and he only had to chip the ball over him

2. Bolton missed a number of chances - even some in the first half

Just been looking for a book to take on holiday with me and I found the 8 page Chronicle coverage of the match plus the match day programme.
That day was my only visit to the old Wembley stadium. It seems so fresh in my mind - or at least the hatred for Bolton is still there.
Time to move on I suppose ...

Has anyone got any article or link to a Bolton site which talks of that game?

I would be very interested to see how they think of it.
