Potential Ground Sharing

by Hendo » 27 Mar 2023 09:31

Looks like Chelsea are exploring options at playing somewhere else if SB is going to be updated.

Sounds like the options are:

Wembley
Twickenham
Craven Cottage
London Stadium
Select Car Leasing Stadium

Would imagine it'll be one of the top two.

Craven Cottage makes most logical sense. I'd estimate at least 90% of Fulham supporters support Chelsea too so it really is a win/win situation.

Yeah isn't Fulham a small place in Chelsea anyway?

This was discussed 7-8 years ago when the Thai's were running the club. Would be amazed if they were still keen. Wembley the obvious no brainer.

Got to think it'll be either of the top two.

I would have thought Chelsea would prefer a stadium with a larger attendance than ours.

No way would it be ours unless they pay for the capacity to be increased up to 36k. Mind you, lots of Chelsea fans living in Reading.

Bin them off if it means making more money.

Probably not, but I guess if they were to share it with a Premier League club, they'd receive a decent wedge for it, which should allow better up-keep and maybe a re-lay more often than was originally planned.

I imagine it'll be Wembley.

Seems odd to say this but I don't think our benches are actually big enough for Premier League games as it stands. They'd have to extend them up into the Lower West or something to accommodate all the subs and auxiliary staff, although I guess if a ground share were to happen they'd probably pay for a lot of improvements in general up front.

Wasn't there some discussion last time about Chelsea paying to expand the stadium if they did pick us? Apparently it wouldn't cost that much comparatively.

Wembley seems like the obvious venue - depends on its availability though.

Why would we ever agree to that? Having someone pay for an upgrade would be swell but we're already playing at a half-full stadium, why would we make it worse?

It wouldn't be Twickenham. It's limited to a certain number of events each year because or the disruption events cause.

Wembley or Fulham are the only realistic options, I think.

Probably, but the same was said about Spurs, no doubt and it didn't seem to stop them.

Would imagine they would just shut off some of the sections.

I wouldn't be against ground sharing with them. Although it's unlikely since we're 40 miles away from Stamford Bridge

Think that’s irrelevant given the number of Chelsea supporting muppets in the east berks area. The issues I’d have are how many potential young Reading supporters would it drive away and what would it do for attendances at Maidenhead, Slough, Bracknell etc.

If it does happen then there’d have to be serious amounts of cash coming Reading’s way (and certainly that over enlarging the stadium).

Considering the relative sizes of the two grounds, I think the demand for tickets would be so massive that the kids you're talking about, as well as the people currently going to Maidenhead, Slough, Bracknell etc. wouldn't have the slightest chance of getting tickets.
