Birmingham away

by Barry the bird boggler » 26 Mar 2012 16:05

No ticket news yet - not expecting any for another week at least but as a guide Crystal Palace fans are paying £23 for an adult, £14 for OAP/Students £9 for 14-18 yr olds and £5 for U13s.

I expect though that prices for our game will be higher given the likely nature of it and what could be riding on it.

Oh and, as it's the last away league game, I amd presuming inflatables will be a must.

Does the train split ticket fiddle still work? i.e cheap day returns to Banbury or somewhere.

We soldout in full 3,000 for west ham, going to do the same i presume at southampton. Will it be 3,000 again for birmingham? or would they let us have a bigger allocation?

Hopefully if the demand is there then they will let us have the whole end.

£14 for a ticket for me would be pretty oxf*rd ace 8) hopefully they dont raise them!

According to Brum's website this is a category B game, and according to football ground guide that'll make it £27.

Can't go to West Ham, Brighton or Soton so I'm sooooooooooooooooooooo IN for this!

We would easily sell 5k and it means virtually anyone who wanted to go would get one.

Completely forgot about that. Was going to book trains but prefer to be flexible after the game.

Excuse my ignorance, how does this legal train"fiddle" work, and can I take advantage of it from London to Brum?

For the Birmingham run you buy a return ticket to from Reading to Banbury, and a separate return ticket from Banbury to Birmingham NS. You stay on the same train because your whole journey is covered. The cost of the "split" ticket is significantly cheaper, around £10 - £15, than an unsplit Reading-Birmingham NS return.

The only rule that I know of is that when you do this you are required to use trains that stop at the station where you have split the ticket. As all XC trains stop at Banbury on the way to Birmingham you have no worries about that.

IN fwiw.

In addition (and IIRC) you can get GroupSaves on the Reading to Banbury portion. Makes it even cheaper.

Don't think you do need to be on a train that stops there. I've been told to get a London Travel card to zone 6 and a Return from West Drayton (I think) to Reading to get from Cambridge to Reading cheaper. I specifically asked the guy if its ok to get the normal Paddington line to Reading which doesn't stop at West Drayton and he said its fine.

The nearest station is Bordesley, which is about a ten minute walk away from the ground, but is only served by trains from Birmingham Snow Hill and Birmingham Moor Street. Normally scheduled trains do not stop at Bordesley, so they don't show up on national timetables searches. Please download the local timetable from the London Midland website for details.

If you arrive at New Street Station in the city centre, either walk to Moor Street station (five minutes) take a taxi (about £6) or embark on the 20-25 minute walk to the ground.

As you come onto the concourse of New St station, bear to the left of the escalators and through the glass doors. Walk down towards to the end of the Station Service Road. Cross to the other side of the road at the bottom (where there is a new shopping centre) turn right and follow the purple pedestrian signs for Digbeth Coach Station. These will see you descending a flight of stairs at the side of the shopping centre on your left and then going down a road with the Markets on your right and a large church on your left. Follow this road around to the right and then take the next left to take you up to the main dual carriage way. Turn right along the dual carriageway, passing the impressive looking Crown Pub on your left. Cross over the dual carriageway to the Crown pub side of the road and continue walking away from the City Centre. You will come to a fork in the road where you want to bear left going underneath a railway bridge. Passing the Clements Arms (not recommended for away fans) on your left just continue straight down this road, crossing a large roundabout (with a McDonalds over on one corner). The entrance to the away section is further up the road on your left.

Otherwise you can take the following buses from the city centre; No: 58, 60, 97 & 97A. However the 97 & 97A drop off on Garrison Lane (near to Tilton Road) which is on the other side of the stadium to the away entrance. These can be caught near to Moor Street Railway Station on Queensway. Look for bus stops ME (58 & 60) and MF (97 & 97A) on this map on the Network West Midlands website (PDF file). Alternatively they can also be caught outside Birmingham Coach Station.

IIRC it was pretty well half the price AND there were no restrictions on what train you took as it was a standard day return compared to a prebooked advanced saver ticket.
