Would London Irish stay at Madejski if they get relegated?

by riverroyal » 08 Dec 2015 15:04

Not sure if this has been anywhere else, but would London Irish remain at Madejski Stadium if they were to get relegated? Almost a third of the way through the season and they are bottom of the league without a win.

The crowds would be really small if they went down (under 2,000 maybe) so cant see them staying around if that was the case.

I wouldn't be bothered if they quit but not sure how much money it brings in for the club (or Thais)

What are the conditions of their contract? How easy would it be for them to upsticks?

Irish only rent the stadium for an initial 12 days of the year...more for cup games. And I believe the revenue from the first 4500 tickets covers the rent/stewarding/facilities for each game.

Aren't they tied in long term, to about 2023 or something.

Where did it all go wrong for London Irish?

Has the manager been sacked yet?

all depends on the terms of the lease I guess.

I can't believe the tenant won't have a break clause in the event of relegation. It would be financial suicide.

If Reading FC tell them they can speak to another venues and they decide to stay does that mean we can sack them a few weeks later?

Only if we initially tell them them we don't want them to speak to them but they insist.

They have a very nice training set-up at Hazlewood, Sunbury........no stadia as such, but all of the space and facilities to emplace some rent-a-stadium type arena.

Richmond used to operate (at a financial loss) at the Madstad with crowds of between 1.5 & 6k
LI are big enough and more financially stable to survive this for a season or two....otherwise it might be off to Adams Park for them

I doubt London Irish could afford to stay at the Madejski if they went down. Crowds would fall from 7000 or so to under 3000, I'd guess, and it just wouldn't be viable.

They might just be regretting selling of their own ground a few years back now. There wasn't much there beyond one small main stand, but at least there was something.

You could be right but, they have a lot of assets and financial backing to call on. I think they would survive a season down.....but it would have to be a successful season leading to promotion.

Thought relegation had been scrapped this season from the league?

Not this season, it has been proposed for next season.

However, LI could escape the drop if the Championship winners don't meet the Premiership "criteria"

Bristol, London Welsh or Leeds would all meet the criteria. Can't see that being an escape route.

Irish would love to get crowds of 7000 ! 3-5000 is about what they get currently.

If they go will some of the pubs in central Reading stop trying to pander to their fans with their phoney Irish decorations?

It certainly wouldn't detract from it

Presumably it would make absolutely no difference, if something you don't go to and aren't interested in, stopped happening ?
There's a fair few Royals fans go to Irish games though, and I'd have thought any decent sports fan would be fairly pleased to have as much top class sport in their area as possible.
Bear in mind Irish play at a higher level than Reading....
