M U R T Y The reason the roundabout is so bad (and the new traffic lights further down the road) is because WDC went for the cheapest option when contracting the work. And thats a FACT

Isn't that what they are obliged to do under Local Government rules?

No. They would be obliged to get a number of quotes and decide which one provided "best value". In practice this often does mean opting for the cheapest but it needn't. Value for money should be taken into consideration, although in this day and age where LGs are driven by the voter who is constantly placing pressure on them to keep Council Tax low, long-term economic factors tend to go out the window.

This hasn't been mentioned yet, but it looks to me that there will be even more disruption at some point. The site plan of Kennet Island (the new housing estate on the A33 where the sewage works used to be) shows a proper junction with the A33, rather than only on one side as it is now.

Presumably this will be traffic light controlled, so progress along the road will be slowed even more.

Then again, the map shows the Kennet crossing the A33 on a bridge, so it may not be entirely accurate.

From the look of that I would say it has it's own slip road off the dual carriage way to enter and leave the site. Still, going to be mucho traffic problems while they build it

As all civ players know, it's spelt "aqueduct".

Never get rid of roundabouts and change them with traffic lights! They did it at the bottom of Langley Hill and that fooked everything up.

 lots of new residential roads to park in make up for the loss of HP parking

The 17 Bus Heard traffic supremo John Howarth talking bout this the other day, he said it will allow the council to monitor the lights so that traffic can flow better, yeah like in the rest of Reading.

...

If anyone has seen the effect of the traffic lights at the junction of London Rd, Eldon Rd and Craddock Rd not working for the last couple of days then you will see how effective the monitoring is. Traffcic is flowing just nicely without the lights.

Looks like a signal-controlled crossroads junction which will also combine the Kennet Island access with the road to the sewage works and tip (what a real surprise that isn't marked on the developers' map!). What looks like a sliproad is probably just a through route - the other lane will be a right turn lane for those coming from town and wanting to go to the tip.

Don't forget that Island Road (the tip road) will be the entrance to the new speedway stadium and casino and will also be the main entrance to the kennet Park (or whatever it's called) development if Prudential ever get planning permission.

Oddly enough I can't find anything on their site that mentions KI is build on the old sewage works, either.

Plenty of comedy value though!

"If what you crave can't be found on your doorstep then rest assured it's only minutes away. So weigh anchor, set sail for the mainland, and discover what Reading has to offer...

giant lions roaming abandoned ruins, frozen monarchs and a replica Bayeux... drift through tranquil gardens or set a course for The Oracle, Broad Street and The Mall where famous brands rub shoulders with boutique shops and market traders...

Then break for coffee and cake by the canal, or pie and a pint by the river, to decide what the evening has in store."

Is this place going to have 50 foot stone walls and a drawbridge?

So then - now this has been finished how does it affect the footy traffic, in & out? I drive over the M4 to get to the mad stad - but have noticed that driving into town is now hindered by those oxf*rd lights - especially by drivers being trapped in the outside lane, wanting to go into town

It does clearly state, well in advance, that that lane is for turning right only.

To be honest it seems to be working quite well on the few occasions that I have to go through that junction (once or twice a week).

Tis awful - replacing roundabouts with traffic lights is one of the worst ideas ever - it didn't work at the bottom of Langley Hill and it doesn't work on Rose Kiln Lane.

Hasn't slowed the traffic down on match days IMHO. Can't say it's improved things either.
