Remember why we left Elm Park?

by The Goat was fed » 18 Aug 2006 20:05

Apart from the limited capacity, one of the main reasons the club gave for leaving Elm Park was the difficulty fans had in parking nearby. It was driving fans away, they said. It was true, too.

The new stadium would have a car park as big as Wembley Stadium, the club claimed (until they decided to build on it).

Fast forward to 2006 and parking is now either mission impossible, requires hiking boots, or an offshore bank account. The club also states in tonight's Post that it is no longer "practical" to subsidise the bus services. Why - because it's so easy to drive there? Err..I don't think so.

Now we're in the big time, the club seems it can take us completely for granted. For most of us, it can get away with it. But for long term success, the club has to win over the floating fan. Instead it just wants to rip them off and/or make it as difficult as possible to get to the ground. It is so short sighted...times will not always be as good as this and then they'll regret it at their leisure as the non-die hards desert in droves.

Can I add that a lot of people don't want to drive so that they can have a couple of drinks.

Maybe the club don't want that though...

We left Elm Park to create the infrastructure for a club that could get into the premier league.

It'll never happen.

Am i the only one that does not believe that the club subsidise the bus services?? If they cant run at full capacity and make a ok profit/cover the costs at what they charge then is time to give someone else a go, why not Horseman, or do they only want the money from the away travel.

Is it just me that thinks that there are a lot of people making a lot of money on the back of the football club in Reading, some i would think more than they deserve for what they add to the club?

Likewise (when I don't fancy a drink - which is a very rare occurence  ) - free, secure parking with only a 15 minute walk to the ground and an easy getaway after the game
