To be fair, this is only their second appearance at a World Cup since then, only appearing in 2014 before now. They did have Portugal, USA and Germany in their group in 2014 as well, collecting just 1 point in a 2-2 draw with Germany. So they've only actually played 4 games since then, not a massive surprise all things considered.

Indeed, that's what I was indicating with the :|

The stat is completely meaningless / irrelevant really.

Still, keeps someone in a job I guess.

Yep - misleading by looking at time rather than how many games they've actually played and who against.

oxf*rd hate stats like that.

"Team X hasn't beaten Team Y in 80 years, how are they ever going to overcome those insurmountable odds today?!!"

Team X has played Team Y once in the intervening 80 years and that was a cup game in which both teams played weaker sides.

Agree with this.
It always sounds more in terms of years but as World Cups only come around every 4 years then since 2010 for example is only 3 occasions.

Got a parent's evening starting in 30mins. Luckily its Zoom but not sure Mrs K is going to be convinced that its acceptable to have Brazil v Switzerland game on in the background. May have to compromise and have it on mute.

I remember when Tommy Wright was on loan to us and he played an absolute bluinder for N.Ireland in a 0-0 draw against Germany. The press were all over the fact that Germany hadn't beaten N. Ireland for 28 years. Turns out that in those 28 years, they'd played each other twice, in friendlies, in Belfast.

It has been good to see that there has been a trend for African, Asian and Middle Eastern teams to exceed expectations in this World Cup, however, is that down to us European fans having an arrogance that we believe that these nations are much weaker then they really are?

Exhibit #1 Wales 0, Iran 2
Exhibit #2 Belgium 0, Morocco 2
Exhibit #3 Germany 1, Japan 2
Exhibit #4, Argentina 1, Saudi Arabia 2

I haven't lost a round in Frimmers' music quiz since narrowly pipping LUX to third!

According to Dale Johnson (VAR specialist, worth following on twitter) the ref got that VAR call wrong

In which mental institution is that ever a penalty? Utterly ludicrous decision by a referee brought about by VAR’s existence and FIFA’s continual law “clarifications”. That said though, that ref shouldn’t get another game and neither should those operating VAR who decided it worthy of his review in the first place.

Even the ultimate referee protector that is Peter Walton couldn’t defend the decision

Offsides ✅
Goal lines ✅
Red card fouls ✅
Deliberate handballs ✅
The rest - NO!!!!

I don’t want defenders to have to put their hands behind their backs when the ball is coming into the area, it stops them being able to balance themselves and defend properly. Cut out all this subjective nonsense about arms being in unnatural positions. Who knows what a natural position is? A tiny move of the body means an arm can come out to keep balance, and everybody has a different centre of gravity - it’s just bollocks.

I assume it's the old way.
Must be deliberate handball otherwise no free kick.

If so I agree it should be this way. I feel there used to be far less disagreement about what was a penalty. And I reckon less of them.

Failing that if they really want to change it just make it the same as hockey. If it hits your hand in the penalty area it's a pen. No argument.

Currently we seem to have an unsatisfactory half way house.

So what is deliberate? Bruno had megged the defender and was past him into the penalty area

- If that gets given against England and we go out I'd be livid
- If that doesn't get given for England and we go out I'd be livid

I've always thought the idea behind the rule "if it hits your hand, it's a foul" was interesting to remove some of the subjectivity of decisions, but I can't see it working in football because you'd be giving fouls/penalties near every game. It's far easier to flick a ball towards someone's hand than it is a hockey puck, and some opponents would play on that. There would also be certain cases where the ball may "brush" the hand of the opponent as well, so the margins of decisions and subjectivity in that respect wouldn't go away, similar principle to the discussion point about whether Ronaldo actually headed the ball for Portugal's opener last night.
