This is Madagascar's first AFCON, too. On paper they have an okay squad - a large handful of them are playing in Ligue 1.

Mauritania worth a mention - also their first AFCON, they were ranked 206th (above just San Marino, Bhutan and Turks & Caicos) in 2014, but have climbed as high as 87th since under the guidance of Corentin Martins, a former French international midfielder.

This was originally to be in Cameroon. I had work up the coast that could have overlapped, which made it A PLAN.

It got moved to Egypt. Brilliant.

Scenes as Madagascar reach the quarter finals. Few years ago they were ranked 109th in the world and they beat Nigeria and Egypt to progress.

Algeria also won their second round tie last night. To say it kicked off in Paris is somewhat understating it. Fleets of mopeds flying Algerian flags doing the rounds.

Nice penalty shoot out between Tunisia and Ghana complete with Tunisia subbing their keeper in the last seconds of extra time. Keeper coming off had a massive sulk and it looked like the incoming keeper had blown it by getting decent hand to the (saveable) first penalty but not stopping it going in. Then made amends by saving the fourth. Tunisian player was cool as f*ck rolling in the fifth to win it.

Well, yes, quite.

Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire were fairly well represented during their games, to be fair, but the two nights Algeria won were insane.

One of our group went home early, took a direct route through the Place de l'Étoile, got tear gassed. Standard.
