If it finishes 1-0 Spain then I may put some money on Germany coming 2nd in the group

Safe money. All Germany need to do basically is beat Costa Rica as I really can’t see Spain dropping points to Japan, however I shall be hoping - and wouldn’t it be weird if Japan and Germany both won and Spain went home….

The Japanese league lads on discord are furious about the coaches tactics and team selection

Mr Angry
tulip Belgium never seem to do well in any tournaments.

Finished 3rd in 2018.........

I was arguing earlier that the one they should have won was Euro 2016, 1-0 v Wales in the QF with an hour to go

SF against Portugal would have been tougher than an unready France in the final.

Bollocks stat as most of these world cup spanning stats are. They've also only lost one in those 12 years and that was on penalties.

they didn't even make it to the knock out round in the other one

I am also a hater of 'bollocks stats', but considering how they have been perceived for the past 12 years I think that is an interesting one.

So the stat is - since winning the 2010 WC - Spain have played 1 knock-out tie. They lost on penalties.

BTW, France will be the first reigning Champions to play a knock-out game since Brazil in 2006. Reigning champions have played a grand total of 6 knock out games since 1998. Brazil are responsible for each one of those, so starting with 1994 winner Brazil.

1998 - Brazil - Final
2002 - France - Group Stage
2006 - Brazil - QF
2010 - Italy - Group Stage
2014 - Spain - Group Stage
2018 - Germany - Group Stage
2022 - France - Last 16 minimum.

Haven't watched much of Andre Onana, for Ajax or Inter or Cameroon - but he has apparently been 'removed' from the Cameroon squad after a frank discussion where he refused the coach's demands that he adopt a more 'traditional' goalkeeping style. Is he a bit of a Bruce Grobbelaar?

Yes, never said he wasn't, just expanded the stat to show of late winners have been shocking 4 years on.

He was suspended by Ajax after being found to have been using banned drugs.

What a potential missed opportunity for Japan and Saudi Arabia with their defats at the weekend, only needed a win and they'd have both been through now. Granted Saudi's game was a fair bit tougher than Japan's. Great opportunity for both to reach the knockout stages and now probably neither of them will get there, but the Saudi's have a better opportunity against Mexico (who haven't scored yet).

Yeah, Japan really blew that yesterday. Can't see them getting anything against Spain.
