Serbia now in front, 2 in 2 minutes. Probably what they deserve tbf. Both sides look fairly open defensively, could be more goals in this I reckon

So the stat is - since winning the 2010 WC - Spain have played 1 knock-out tie. They lost on penalties.

BTW, France will be the first reigning Champions to play a knock-out game since Brazil in 2006. Reigning champions have played a grand total of 6 knock out games since 1998. Brazil are responsible for each one of those, so starting with 1994 winner Brazil.

1998 - Brazil - Final
2002 - France - Group Stage
2006 - Brazil - QF
2010 - Italy - Group Stage
2014 - Spain - Group Stage
2018 - Germany - Group Stage
2022 - France - Last 16 minimum.

So, in summary, Winston was right. Thaks for clearing that up.

Yes, never said he wasn't, just expanded the stat to show of late winners have been shocking 4 years on.

They probably tend to not bring in new players as much due to loyalty to perceived winners. Germany cruised to victory in the 2017 intercontinental cup with new young hungry players, but then for no obvious reason Low reverted back to the fading World Cup winners of 2014 when it got to Russia.

Tough to compare from World Cup to World Cup, 4 years in football is a long time. Your players that were in their primes aged 28-30 are now suddenly 32-34, a couple will have probably retired and some may have regressed and moved down to a lower level than where they were.

It's not often that you get someone winning 2 World Cup's in a row, think it's only happened once or twice (I haven't checked). I think it more underlines how good Spain were from 2008 to 2012 when they won 3 tournaments of the bounce.

There will undoubtedly be the same-ish teams at the top of the game such as your likes of Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Germany, France and (dare I say) England, but not often does one country dominate for a sustained period of time due to the time difference between tournaments.

The full compliment of subs running on the pitch to celebrate a first half goal gets a massive :| from this commenter..

Ref should have booked the lot of them

A draw doesn't really help Cameroon, they really need to win with Brazil as their last game and then hope that Serbia beat Switzerland by a goal so they can go through on GD potentially, although even that seems unlikely.

Brazil should go through with a win against Switzerland which then leaves winner takes all between Serbia and Switzerland really, if it stays how it is. I can't see Cameroon beating Brazil last, but stranger things have happened.

I generally love those whole team celebrations, but must admit, doing it in the first half does seem a little odd. Notable exception would be someone like Canada, who scored their first ever World Cup goal, that feels acceptable to me.

Each to their own though.

BBC Statsman say:

Ghana have scored the opening goal in a World Cup match for the first time since their quarter-final match against Uruguay in 2010.

Wow. :|

To be fair, this is only their second appearance at a World Cup since then, only appearing in 2014 before now. They did have Portugal, USA and Germany in their group in 2014 as well, collecting just 1 point in a 2-2 draw with Germany. So they've only actually played 4 games since then, not a massive surprise all things considered.

Indeed, that's what I was indicating with the :|

The stat is completely meaningless / irrelevant really.

Still, keeps someone in a job I guess.

cracking pair of games so far today..

Seems a bit odd that a handball (even accidental) that you directly score a goal from means it's ruled out, but if your teammate scores directly from it, it isn't..

Yep - misleading by looking at time rather than how many games they've actually played and who against.
