Streets Papers today claim that Man City are prepared to buy the very best players and offer up to £500,000 a week in wages to get them.

In a game where money talks, City will leave everyone in their wake.

Real, Barca, Chelsea, United, Milan...they can't compete with that.

Something needs to be put in place to stop this sort of thing happening

Would salary capping work? - probably not although they have it in Rugby, don't they?

I'd like to see salary caps, and transfer caps even.

But I can't see either happeneing. Money talks, even if it is ruining the game.

Or how about you start by not believing all b0ll0cks they put in the papers.

Seriously, if The News of the World told you that they were planning to relocate Man City to Abu Dhabi you'd probably believe it and be up in arms about it 'ruining the game I love....blah blah blah"

Several nobbers have already expressed the sentiment that "City > Chelsea" even though the spending has hardly begun. This suggests to me that many nobbers accept the idea that money = football. Spending vast amounts more has not made Chelsea better than Man U or the best Arsenal side of the last decade, but it has made them competetive thanks largely to the work of Mourinho. If City go throwing around insane amounts of money to acquire players like Robinho, they'll still have a job on their hands to even emulate Chelsea let alone be much better.

I think most people would agree that the money in football is obscene and clubs shouldn't be the playthings of rich people. Regardless of Man City's new owners, football is already pretty fooked up. It's got nothing to do with speculation in the papers.

Can you remind me when clubs weren't the playthings of rich people?

In years gone by it was the local rich businessmen. Now we live a globalised post modern world, it's still a rich person who owns the club, they just may not be from the local area. You need an extra couple of 0's on the cheque nowadays, which is out of the realms of affordibility for your local second-hand-car-magazine-publisher-made-good. Hence the influx of new world money.

In addition football has always had problems. In the 50's it was players didn't get paid enough, in the 70's & 80's it was hooligans, and now it's too much money. People just love having something to moan about and it is so very boring.

Streets Fair play to the new owner. Arsenal all set to be the 5th best club in England.
Probably still finish above Liverpool in the league.

Focher You just know that the Dubai Royal family are gonna buy a club now to out do their Abu Dhabi counterparts, its gonna be Camel racing at half time and a public stoning after the game for entertainment.

MiniRoyal So people shouldn't complain about problems in football, but just get on with it? You should get a job at premier league HQ.

I've never suggested that teams attempting to buy their way to success was something new (Derby/Wolves/Blackburn of 10-15 years back), rather offered my opinion of how I'd like to see things. This is a football discussion forum and if we're not supposed to be debating the current state of football and what we'd do about it then I'm not sure what this part of the forum's for.

Fair enough. I just think that a lot of football fans just like something to moan about. If we had salary caps and no outside funding what do you think would happen to the quality of football? It would be TERRIBLE at most clubs. We'd be in League 1 for a start.

See how quickly fans start moaning about the 'dranconian controls on football' in that situation. The grass is always greener my friend.

Apologies if I sound harsh / cynical, but your job suggestion wasn't far off - I do work with the Premier League regularly so I can probably be considered a biased corporate wh0re....

I agree with that.

Its not the money, per se, its the classlessness they've bought into.
