Preston North End's captain and five other players at the club have been named as six arrested in connection with a spot-fixing investigation.

Captain John Welsh, Keith Keane, Bailey Wright, David Buchanan, Ben Davies and Graham Cummins were arrested on Thursday, the BBC understands.

Suspended sentence for Matt Partridge

A 20-YEAR-old professional footballer with the Royals' Academy who punched a man in a road rage attack wept as a judge gave him a suspended sentence.

Judge Angela Morris heard at Reading Crown Court yesterday how Matt Partridge was driving his Vauxhall Corsa in Woolhampton on August 29 last year when he was in collision with 40-year-old motorcyclist, James Mannion.

Partridge refused to disclose his details and as Mr Mannion tried to take a photograph of the car's registration number, Partridge pushed him into a hedge.

Lisa Goddard, prosecuting, said Partridge gripped Mr Mannion by the throat, he swore at him and punched him three times in the face.

The third blow to his eye made his brow bleed profusely, his eye swelled and caused him to lose sight at first, then lose colour vision for some time and required repeated visits to hospital.

Mr Mannion was taking pain killers for 15 days after the incident and still has residual eye problems.

Partridge pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm at Newbury Magistrates' Court in February, but because he contested Mr Mannion's account saying he was acting in self defence, there was a Newton hearing and magistrates convicted him and sent him to crown court for sentence.

Partridge, of Oak Tree Road, Thatcham arrived at court today with an overnight bag because he faced a custodial sentence.

Speaking for him Eamonn Dolan, manager of Reading Football Club Academy told the court he had known Partridge since he was 10-years-old.

He said the club took what Partridge had done "very, very seriously" and had fined him the maximum of one months' salary. Partridge earns £350 a week.

He said: "Matt is a popular chap, he is a good looking lad, he's got a good social network, popular in the changing room and popular with the staff. He is not very loud, he's just normal."

Mr Dolan said to the judge: "I am no appealing on behalf of him as a good footballer for us, I am appealing for him. It's just that deep down there is a good character in there."

Academy safeguarding manager David Downs described Partridge as "excellent" and "training assiduously and playing well".

He said he was not in the first team adding: "I'm not here because he is a star player, but because he is one of us."

Mr Downs said the club would support him in whatever rehabilitation was necessary.

Steve Molloy, defending, said Partridge "lost his temper with catastrophic consequences".

The court also heard he had a previous caution for hitting a friend in a nightclub when he had been drinking.

Judge Morris ascertained there was no question of alcohol on the day of the offence which took place in the morning when both men were on their way to work.

She sentenced Partridge to 12 months' detention suspended for two years, ordered him to carry out 240 hours unpaid work and to pay Mr Mannion £2,000 in compensation.

She said Partridge had behaved in "an aggressive and offensive fashion" adding: "What is absolutely clear to me was that this was a loss of temper on your part."

However she said it was "somewhat out of character".

She said a lot of people had invested a lot of time in Partridge and urged him to show he could be the "disciplined individual" described in the many letters of character reference she had read.

Partridge's parents were both in court.

No mention yet whether Reading have or will dispense with his services or give a final chance.

I'm not really sure that that makes beating a man up for nothing okay?

GIven SJMs love for being known as a family club and how upset he was that the hooliganism article bought that into doubt, I'm quite surprised that he'd allow the club to publicly back a little shit to avoid jail time. Not cool Reading, not cool!

Colin Kazim-Richards has been found guilty of making a homophobic gesture at a match against his former club Brighton and fined £750 for the "insulting" gesture he made to the crowd at The Amex.
Prosecutor Simon Allen told the court a witness had seen Kazim-Richards backing into Brighton player Wayne Bridge and simulating a sex act deemed to be homophobic after the chants after the home supporters chanted ‘you fat b*****d’ at him.
He added: ‘It seems that the player reacted to this and he mimicked pulling down his shorts and with his left hand behind his back mimicked that he had something in his hand and moved it back and forward.’
