you can't think of a current manager/club_legend who scored the winner in a CL cup final.

Notably started tenure incredibly well and finished it equally shite!

Assume you meant Solskjaer, but I didn't think he'd really used up any 'slack' yet, given the mess United were in when he took over.

If he starts the season with Young, Jones and Smalling in the back 4 he's as good as gone

How are those three still at Utd?

Gary Monk sacked, tried looking at the club statement on their website, but it seems to have crashed!

Derby confirm they have given permission to Chelsea to speak to Frank Lampard about the manager's job. So that will be confirmed in the next day or two then.

Apparently he is off to China.

Which is a shame. Thought he'd be a good fit as a national team boss.

Good on Lamps - he had a very decent first season as a manager, I just hope Chelsea give him some rope, because it's a massive step up, he won't be able to sign anyone, and they've just lost Hazard.

Do you think he had a very decent season? Surely he just achieved a par result for Derby, who've done pretty much the same as this year for the last 5 or 6 years?

They played some decent stuff at times, from what I saw, and he had some exciting young talent in the side, but did he get them to over-achieve?

I'm looking at it with the context of it being his first season in management, too. He had some players to replace, like Vydra, Weimann, Ledley and made some good acquisitions in Mount, Tomori, Wilson, Waghorn and Malone and brought through players like Bogle (formerly a Reading academy player fwiw) from the youth setup. Results were up and down, particularly in the middle of the season, but his team certainly had an identity. So yeah, a very good start for him, imho. Not the sort of season though, I admit, that I expected to see Chelsea interested, beyond sentiment.

Fair enough, they certainly recruited well, I'd more than agree with that.

I'm pretty sure Chelsea wouldn't be interested if they weren't under the transfer embargo. They'll struggle to attract a top end name manager this season so it's almost a free hit for Lampard.

I am also of the opinion that Lampard just helped Derby continue what Derby have done for the past 5 or 6 seasons i.e throw lots of money around while flailing around the edges of the play offs and ultimately failing

Presumably he won't be able to get any Chelsea youngsters on loan if he goes to the Bridge

Arguably he took Derby backwards

The finished 6th in 2017/18 as well but in 18/19, they got 1 point less and scored one less goal. They were better defensively mind, though GD was 7 worse. Their 3 best players were PL loanees, so will be interesting to see what happens there next year once he is gone.

Derby's finishes since 2010-11:

19
12
10
3
8
5
9
6
6

You've got to commend Lampard taking Derby from 6th to 6th

He did a a solid job retaining that 6th place while amassing less points than his predecessor
