England World Cup Qualifiers

by Hoop Blah » 30 Aug 2012 12:15

Hodgson's first squad for the 2014 Qualifiers vs Moldova and Ukraine:

Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Sunderland), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).

Forwards: Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United).

No major shocks that I can think of, although I'm not sure why he's picked 3 left backs. I guess it's just to get Bertrand involved and suss him out a little bit.

Carroll good enough for England but not mid-table Liverpool

What has Tom Cleverley done to warrant an England call-up ?

Is Parker injured, left out or retired? Still no Richards?

The sooner Sturridge descends down the leagues the better.

Zammo That's the last time we'll see Johnson in an England shirt.

Damn the USSR for splitting up. We are forever doomed to get the most boring, mundane groups made up of various little eastern European hellholes who stand better chance on Eurovision than in a qualification group. I'm looking forward to Poland for the banter with various sausage roles I know round here but will likely give a wide berth more generally from now on going to watch to any eastern block, Baltic, Balkan, or ex-Soviet teams.

Bring back the USSR!

Parker and Richards are both injured I think, certainly Richards is and I don't think Parker has played for Spurs so far this season.

Carroll - different styles warrant different players I guess, plus of course Liverpool aren't restricted to Englishmen.

Cleverly - I'm not convinced yet but he has looked like one of the better young midfielders with the technique and style to look after the ball more than we're used to seeing. Is there anyone with a better claim?

tbf he's not the only one in the sauad who isn''t a regular starter with their clubs I'll be watching the qualifyers but I have to say I really struggle to get up much enthusiasm for international games.

Carroll out with his hamstring injury, and Cole rules out for the Moldova game so a good move to have 3 left backs in afterall.

Team for Friday?

I'd like to see:

Hart
Walker Jagielka Lescott Baines
Gerrard Carrick Lampard
Walcott Defoe A Johnson

Probably won't be, I imagine G Johnson, Terry, Milner and Welbeck will all play.

They are yes. But I'd like to see others in there, especially against Moldova. Bring them in for Ukraine on Tuesday.
