Europe's greatest football cities and why?

by Royalclapper » 03 Oct 2012 18:38

Very subjective topic but here's my own shortlist:

1. Liverpool - Two great clubs, both domestic league winners, European trophy pedigree, genuine global football interest taken by the population.

2. Manchester - As above but with more satellite clubs in the metro area.

3. London - The sheer volume of clubs and the amount of people attending games, even given its size.

4. Madrid - Two great clubs plus satellites, European trophy pedigree, European Cup's biggest and most successful club.

5. Milan - As above except European Cup's 2nd most successful club.

6. Glasgow - Two great clubs, wings clipped due to poor quality domestic league.

I wouldn't include Barcelona due to them being a regionally important club, not just city wise even though Espanyol are also there.

Two great clubs? Two 'great' clubs thanks to the shite they play against week in, week out; and they're both dogshit in Europe. They're not great clubs, but they are well supported.

Celtic have won the European Cup. Both have recently been in the UEFA/Europa league final - Rangers lost in Manchester to Zenit, Celtic lost to Porto. Great effort from clubs in that league.

You missed out one of the few cities to have provided two European Cup semi-finalists.

Harsh.

Glasgow had three stadiums holding over 100,000 for the first half of the 20th century. No other city can come close to that. Hampden was second only to the Maracana in terms of size. It is, undoubtedly, a great football city

I only think the last of those is correct, and was the one I was thinking of.

Edit: there's actually more cities than I thought with that claim now. 12 I think at the last count.

I'm sure both the Belgrade clubs have been in the European Cup Final. I remember Red Star winning it in the early 90's, think Partizan may have been runners up a good while earlier.

Baffled how Manchester gets number two spot based on one clubs achievements. Milan and Madrid easily above.

TBF neither Milan or Madrid have won the English Second Division Title.

That was the joke, kind of like Del Boy's van (New York, Paris, Peckham). Throw in the two famous cities with a footballing pedigree when the real answer is the shithole in Scotland.

So 1 European Cup win and that was almost half a century ago. They played a whole 4 games to reach that final such was the strength of football in Europe at the time beating the mighty FK Vojvodina & Dukla Prague along the way

Lol, just lol
