Victor Meldrew I can't see that anybody else has picked up on the fact that Irishman McLean of Sunderland refused to wear a shirt with a poppy on it.
With all the stuff about not wearing "kick it out " t-shirts (optional and it was not part of their work uniform) how disrespectful was it for McLean to refuse to wear the special shirt on a special Saturday?
Why doesn't he f*** off back to Ireland and earn a living there?

Where will all this end?
Will Jason Roberts refuse to wear a Reading shirt because he shops at Lidl rather than Waitrose?
Will one of the teams sponsored by online bookies get players not wearing the shirt becauuse they don't bet?
Will non-drinkers refuse to wear a shirt if their club is sponsored by a drinks companies?
Will they refuse to wear boots unless the leather comes from humanely slaughtered animals?

You are footballers-get on with doing what you are paid to do.

What a pile of poo. The clubs and players get paid for those things. The poppy is a different thing altogether.

Of course I understand that ,dumbo-the point about advertising on shirts was done to widen the topic.

John Madejski's Wallet
Alexander Litvinenko Because correct me if I'm wrong, all those people being commemorated died so that people could have personal freedom of choice.

Here here

And as such, it is our right to consider him a scummy little feeble-minded irish pcunter and treat him accordingly

This.

Anyway even that squirt Neil Lennon had a cheeky little poppy on Sunday:

I didn't realise they were being paid to promote the british Legion appeal?

They are paid by their clubs.
The clubs all bought into to the poppy thing.
Ergo.......ged it?
Does it really need to be spelt out?

Agree wholeheartedly with poppy day and it should be an International thing to commemorate the dead of all wars everywhere (sadly what the world lacks at the moment). Also believe strongly there should be a white poppy for the millions of "civilians" that got caught up in various wars either just through being their ot through the nature of their jobs.

I think everyone agrees that. But should it be compulsory, and doesn't it lose any meaning if it is?

I don't agree with Mclean's decision not to wear a poppy on his shirt but at the same time I respect his feelings - but at the same time he should not of been using the Remberence Weekend to view his political opinions .

Isn't the poppy a symbol in commonwealth countries?

Yes a small number of Repulican tools sided with the Nazi's. However, as far as I am aware plenty of Irish signed up to fight against them.

There were those from the South, and Catholics and Protestants from the North, that also fought and lost their lives or limbs to terrorism within the Province and Republic.

Sad that he couldn't recognise that fact for just a couple of hours.

oxf*rd off back to Ireland you dirty finnian basterd. If it wasn't for our brave boys giving up there lives on the beaches of Normandy, he would not even have the right to choose to wear a poppy or not. Let alone be a millionaire just for kicking a ball about every Saturday. Someone should give him a history lesson.

The IRA helped to fuel U boats off the west coast in exchange for weapons. Although De Valera claimed to be nuetral he hated Churchil and compared British rule of Ireland the same as the German's in occupied Europe.

McLean should read this book - 'Spitting on a Soldier's Grave - he might change his mind.

Maguire - you might like to read this Wikipedia entry - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_neut ... rld_War_II

There are many countries around the world that recognise Armistace Day and use the poppy as a symbol of rememberance. Certainly in Oz where I picked up a really tasty lapel badge that makes the UK ones look remarkably shabby. Even the paper poppies over here are of a superior quality. IIRC, there was an article on the BBC News website last year naming the countries that observed 11th November. And here it is http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15637074
