Pepe the Horseman How the fcuk are Scotland 27th?

Unbeaten in our last 5, including away wins in Poland and Norway and a home win against Croatia

And let's be honest. If England played Scotland now, the score would be pretty close. Not a huge gap in terms of class is there?

That's not because Scotland have got better though. Wikipedia has the squad listed from the Scotland-Nigeria game: it's a sorry list of players.

Odd that Brazil who reached the semis fell below Uruguay who went out in the last 16.

I suppose 20th sounds about fair for us right now.

Outside of the top few, not very much separates most of the teams in the top 20. Games from 4 years ago drop off, replaced by the more recent ones. If I could be arsed, I'd look up the scores and tell you, because the algorithm used is transparent.

That'll wipe the smile off the face of those laughing about our superb victories against Oman and Georgia, won't it?

Brazil had 2 years of friendlies which don't score as heavily in the ranking calculations either. I saw an article which suggested that a for example, a win away to the Germany in a friendly would score a similar number of points as a win at home to Hungary in a competative match.

This was mooted as an argument when the seedings were announced for the World Cup, Switzerland edged out England primarily due to England playing and losing friendlies against the likes of Brazil or Italy and scoring 0 ranking points whereas Switzerland would beat the likes of Oman in friendlies and pick up 100 points. This was the difference between being seeded and not being seeded. The arguement being that you weight your friendlies in the 18 months before a major tournament to pick up easy ranking points

Just noticed this and had a look. Spain have been absolute bobbins this year (relatively speaking), losing 6 out of 11 (Netherlands twice, Germany, France, Chile and Slovakia), and only beating Ukraine of any note.

It took them 61 games and an entire World Cup cycle to lose 6 times before that.
