Cloughie Ten Years Gone

by AthleticoSpizz » 19 Sep 2014 21:41

20th September 2004, and just like those that are old enough to remember that Kennedy assassination, I still remember where i was when I heard the news

He remains that legend that I/We/England pretty much missed out on.

Sorely missed in todays sterile game

Or Herbert Chapman, Huddersfield and Arsenal manager. Before my time but blimey he had success, and after taking over lowly positioned teams.
Also lauded as an innovater, we would do well to follow his philosophies, now where can we get some speedy wingers from?

I'd like to see Mourinho build a provincial second tier club into champions of England within a matter of years.....twice over and without a bottomless pit of money to do so.

Whilst insisting his teams played fairly. Very honest and straightforward man, and he expected his players to behave on and off the field.

He was also remarkably kind.

As much as I'd like to see Clough win the league in 4 different countries as well as win the European Cup/Champions League with 2 different clubs.

I can't believe it's only 10 years ago. If you'd said 20 I wouldn't have been surprised.

£1b I think they've said Mourinho has spent on players. Cloughie and Ferguson are in a completely different league. Top class!

Also remember that Forest won the title after being promoted the previous season. That will NEVER happen again in the game's current climate. Clough also managed to convert existing under-performing members of his squad, i.e. John Robertson, Tony Woodcock, into brilliant players.

Watching Forest rip United apart 4-0 at Old Trafford during their title season was memorable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAIs0yFvHFk

A remarkable managerial talent.

A bit bemused to see Mourinho even mentioned on this thread, let alone heralded in favour of BC.

There can be no comparison between Manager and Bank Manager

Agh yes the old 'Jose ain't no Clough' argument. Usually comes down to JM having money and BC not spending any. Two words for that....Trevor Francis.

Clough could spaff when he had to, but he had a real eye for bargains: Archie Gemmill, Dave Mackay, Peter Withe, John O'Hare, Garry Birtles, Kenny Burns, Larry Lloyd among others.

Saw the highlights of Forest at Spurs last night. Loads of the forest fans had green sweatshirts on! nice touch.

I read today about 1. FC Kaiserslautern in Germany (not comparing, not disagreeing with your point - just think the story worth telling) who won the cup in 1996 but got relegated from the 1. Bundesliga (only time a relegated team has won the cup here). In 1997, they won the second division to come straight back up and in 1998 won the 1. Bundesliga for only the fourth time in their history.

Their trainer was Otto Rehhagel who later led Greece to the the European Championships in 2004.

Winning the European Cup when it was a proper cup, and doing it twice with a provincial side is a pretty decent achievement. Probably better than doing it with 2 teams with no financial constraints.
