Rochdale trophy room

by The Cube » 23 May 2015 08:19

I went to Spotland last week - because it was for a rugby league match I was able to have a good wander through the main stand. The trophy room is a small corridor between two function rooms. As you would imagine there is not a lot there, despite it covering two sports. The most amusing was the trophy for reaching the area final of the Football League Trophy which someone had proudly engraved with "Auto Windscreens Sheild".

In one of the function rooms they had memorabilia on the wall. One set commemorated their Wembley appareance (glossing over the result) with Le Fondre pictured in a goal celebration. Another was their certificate for taking part in the 125th FA Cup. Presumably Reading have something similar hidden away.

Apologies for anyone expecting an amusing joke about thieves and a blue carpet....

No lols

"Rockie" a good old fashioned football team, not tainted by the 21st century.

Always keep an eye open for them.

And I bet that, that is one more reply than what you ever expected.

The fact they spent 40 odd years in the 4th tier of English football so long it became known as the Rochdale league is history to me. You don't nee a trophy for that.

Yeh when it used to just be one relegation spot (and probably only 2 promotion spots before the play offs came into being) the old 4th was a real stagnant ground for shitty clubs not terrible enough to get relegated but never in danger of going up. The conference back then was famously more competitive than the old 4th, full of aging pros seeing out their playing days in comfortable surroundings.

Not sure to what extent, if at all, that's still true?

But anyway, noone epitomised that more than Rochdale, and that's certainly worth of merit.

Love this. Surely one of the most obscure and strange places one can visit in world football is the Rochdale Trophy room.

Imagine if they pulled off a miracle and won the FA Cup of something. It'd be like walking past the few shelves in Burnham Public Library only to find a Guttenburg Bible encased in a glass case in the corner.
