Winston Smith Do people need any more proof that the Championship is a gash standard? Competitive so entertaining, but a really sh*t standard.

Shit standard compared to PL/Bundesliga/La Liga ofc. Compared to most other leagues in Europe I reckon it's equal if not better.

Exactly. Norwich (and Villa) struggling a little after relegation confirms that the standard in the Championship is OK. It doesn't have many of the famous Champions League teams that some of the lesser European Leagues have, like Celtic or Ajax, but there is a consistently high standard and strength in depth that can make it entertaining to watch and anything but predictable.

In a year when the Premiership is struggling a bit, lacking in-form players and excitement, the Championship comes out quite well by comparison.

But on the other hand Newcastle are romping away with it and we all know what a sensation they'd be in the PL

Dwight Gayle, the man too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premier League.

A yo-yo player?

I'm a big fan of the Championship because of two perhaps opposing things:

1) Almost all of players all could play in the Premiership and probably not look out of place for a game or two. They are good, solid professional footballers.

2) There is always at least one player on each side that really could not.

When you look at players who score loads in the Championship, they typically fall into two categories - the big, bruising old school centreforward or the smaller, quick, goal poacher. Neither really do that well in the next level as their success is often about a physical strength (speed or, errr, strength). The ones that do make the step up are the ones that have had to rely on movement and brains.

Anyway, here's a list of Championship top scorers. How many have definitely made the step-up. I would be pretty sure that in all those seasons, someone with about half those goals then went on and 'made it' at the next level.

Season   Top scorer                      Club                    Goals
2004–05      Nathan Ellington            Wigan Athletic            24

2009–10      Peter Whittingham           Cardiff City              20

Brum Royal According to Derby supporting friends of mine, he basically dropped to about 5th choice centre back last season under the previous manager. Pearson seems to rate him higher so he's more like third choice now apparently. I do feel sorry for him, he's had a real rough time of it (footballing wise) since leaving us

Also one of the highest paid players at Derby

For the players I'd imagine the old adage stands - 'if you don't know who that player is, then it's you.'

Sad that they are now 91st in the football league. For the record, Exeter are 92nd and Reading have contributed a player to both causes for the first half of this season !

Also that wiki page quotes Luton as being an emerging club in the East Anglian region

Well, I suppose there's Ricky Lambert, who had a decent season and a half in the Premiership.

Surprised Whittingham never got a move away from Cardiff.

Gray my yet show he's good enough.

There's a tonne of players who had a decent first season in the Prem. Leroy "sexface" Lita, for a start.

Whittingham's lack of progress seems an odd one. For quite a while he was generally seen to be one of the best players outside the PL yet no one appeared to take a punt on him and he has now been at Cardiff for around 10 years.

He was a promising youngster at Villa for a few seasons before Cardiff, so he's experienced the Premier league and its standard. Maybe he's just happy and settled?
