What this does is degrade actual showings of respect for legends that die. What the oxf*rd were the club thinking

I can see how this wouldn’t fly with some people.

Probably not a problem for fair feather fans though.

Whilst a little 'cringe', this wasn't as bad as first looked. First, the applause was at half time. Second, it was deliberately ironic and in the happy agreement of a well-known Wigan fan, also called Keith, who is suffering from cancer and has been invited into club hospitality at their next game.

And perhaps it's a bit of a satirical nod to the idea that there are far, far too many of these celebrations, for far to many reasons. It used to be for long-serving players, manager or chairmen, and you might get one a season - nowadays hardky a match goes by without something like this at some stage.

Surely the sheer number of them renders them meaningless?
