Seal I would have probably reacted in the same way if I was an Arsenal fan - but it's all in the heat of the moment. I''m sure the Arsenal fans know deep down that if you dish it out you've got to expect it back. All in all it adds to the drama of the match, and reminds you why there's nothing like being there as a fan rather than sitting on your arse watching it on the telly.
I actually don't believe that's right. I reckon there are a majority of supporters who genuinely don't see the irony of it being ok for them to dish out insults, but seeing reciprocal behaviour by footballers as unforgivable.
I haven't listened to 606 for many years, but I bet it was full of righteous indignation from fans trotting out the old "professional footballers shouldn't behave like this line". Like they are the last bastion of restrained behaviour in society.
FWIW, I think the whole situation was great. I've hurled abuse at Joe Allon when he scored for Brentford in front of us in 1993 (and he spat on the running track in response) and Andy Johnson more times than I care to remember. It's not big, it's not clever, but we all love it, don't we?
