Apparently they turned United down flat when they bid for him a couple of weeks ago. Has always been one of my favourite players.

Odd that, not as if United are competing with them in the Champions League, where as Bayern are probably their main rivals for it.

Very much so. Along with Ronaldo he's probably the player whose absence you notice the most when he's not playing, they just don't look like the same team. He was injured at the start of last season and they started poorly, when he came back they went about 30 matches unbeaten.

You can buy someone as a replacement, doesn't mean they're going to fulfil the role as effectively. Makelele.
