Barnet FC

by Stuka » 15 Jul 2010 17:22

I'm off to Barnet on Saturday for a pre-season friendly with a mate. Never been before, anyone know of good pubs near by? I hear the pitchslopes down the hill quite a bit. Should be fun, only up the road from me you see.

How do you rate Underhill in terms of a day out?

Remember getting ankle deep in rainwater when we played Barnet at Underhill years ago, in our 93/94 promotion season?

Have a few beers and the rest will follow, i think there are pubs around...hmmm not much help.

93/94 was the last time I was there as well. Even got there for the postponed game. Can't tell you about the pubs though. Try http://www.beerintheevening.co.uk

Same here, not been since 93/94 season including the postponed match. I vaguely remember drinking in central London and having to bail out of the Northern Line before reaching Barnet otherwise my bladder was going to explode!

If it is just down the road from you why don't you know every pub within a 5 mile radius of Underhill??!! I'm sure Finchley would have some half decent pubs.

There was a pub in East Finchley called the Bald-faced Stag that nobody ever went to more than once...

The Old Red Lion pub - gr8 McMullen beers on tap. Really good pub.

Maquisard - you're thinking of the old Bald Faced Stag. The new one, as of the last couple of years, is a revamped real ale pub. It is, however, some distance from Underhill.

Thanks for the tips. I will try the Red Lion. In time I will know every pub in North London, at least ones that sell decent beer and within a five mile radias of N7. So it would seem Reading haven't played there since the early 90's?

Tidy little ground, went there when Keith Scott scored the golden goal in the Freight Rover Trophy/Sherpa Van Trophy/LDV Vans Trophy/Auto whatever cup it was called the year they had golden goal rule.

I think there is a social club at the ground.

The Red Lion was good, McMullen's ale on tap which is a personal favourite. The slope at Underhill is striking, but an enjoyable afternoon in the Hertfordshire sun. (although i think Barnet is now offically in London)

My only regret was that the stadium PA guys neglected to play anything by B Bumble & the Stingers, Love Buzz by Nirvana, or indeed anything by Sting.
