Left back rumour thread

Have you heard anything about signing a left back?

If so put it here.

Here's hoping something materialises!

Nah. Shall we start one?

I have it on good authority we are looking to bring in David Murphy from Birmingham. Possibly on a season long loan.

Do you mean Brett? He's a striker.

Source for that Murphy rumour?

Why do we need another left back?

^ this. Harte is more than capable, but slow. Marcus Williams should have another chance before we bring in another left back. Though I would be in favour of a cheapo gamble like Shorey was.

Similar for right back except Cummings should come in asap and Griffin dropped as cover.

If we could get Williams off the books, or magically morph him into a decent defender, then I'd be happy for us to make a change on the left.

Harte is ok but as Saturday showed, he can get taken to bits a bit easily at times (especially if we're not covering his weaknesses well enough as we did last season). There's been lots of talk on here about his set pieces being that good that he should be carried as a weakness for those alone. If they're as bad as they were on Saturday for much longer he'll be out on his ear.

I can't see us affording a better option at left back until we get rid of Williams though.

Harte dosent need replacing- he was the best left back in the league last season - hence him getting in team of the year. saturday he gave henry nothing forcing him to switch to the left where there goal came from. Henry is going to be one of the better wingers in this div that he will face and coped fine, griff is more of an issue but cummings will be our rb come end of season.

If we get rid of Harte we lose about 10 goals a season. McAnuff/Hunt may get one or two from fk's but IMO Harte is essential.

Harte with 2 CBs who know each other, and a full back on the other side with a little pace, is fine.

Harte with two CBs in their first game together, + one injured and ageing RB probably isnt.

Stick Cummings in and we'll do fine.

Why would we lose 10 goals?
Others are capable of taking free-kicks and penalties, maybe not as well but the guy is not infallible and somebody else taking the number of free-kicks and penalties as he did last season could well produce 5-6 goals.
A better left-back might increase assists in open play and do the main job which is to defend.
On Saturday yet again Harte was in no-man's land for both of the Millwall goals, his positional play leaves a lot to be desired and his lack of pace is chronic.
All in all a liability rather than an asset IMHO.
Marcus Williams must be even worse than we think he is.
