LoyalRoyal22 Decent squad player.

His last 4 seasons in the Championship:

15 goals in 33 games
15 goals in 29 games
19 goals in 35 games
10 goals in 30 games

Considering 40 of those goals came playing for a struggling Doncaster team, I think it's safe to say that at this level he is far more than just a 'decent' squad player.

Le Fondre > Sharp

Le Fondre's one season at Championship level:

12 goals in 32 games

Not much to separate them in terms of record. Yes Alfie scored goals in the Prem last season, but who's to say Sharp wouldn't have scored a similar number if he'd got the minutes? Billy has pretty much consistently scored at 1 goal every 2/3 games in the Championship over a number of seasons. Would be an excellent addition. He also offers more in terms of his all-round game, and the fact that Saints fans are disappointed at losing him despite having strikers like Lambert, Rodriguez, and (potentially) Damiao on the way tells you all you need to know. He's also a decent guy who has shown gr8 courage over the last few seasons given his tragic loss.

FTR, I think if we have both Alfie and Sharp on the books next season they'll both score plenty. Hopefully this will be the case.

Could someone tell me,if we sign Sharp would that mean Alf would go?Some people seem to think he will,I can't see why he should.

Billy Sharp is on his way to Reading. Really disappointed he didn't get more of a chance last season. Apparently we agreed a fee of £1.8m, which isn't bad I suppose.

Reading hope to announce the signing by Wednesday if the remainder of the talks are a formality as expected.

I think we will want to have another signing done before we go on the trip abroad perhaps even all our business completed. Will be interesting to see if we leave any key players behind which would say a lot about their futures. (exceptions of the unfit Roberts and Kebe)

Fee is reportedly 750k.

What an awful transfer this has turned out to be (if true).

This boy had immense potential, I'm unhappy he never had the chance to bloom at RFC. It also seems that, regardless of all the big promises, we are still not buying good players. If they are free we jump straight in, if they cost what they are worth, we are still just talking rubbish.

Did we not buy Williams? What about Mariappa last season, I take it we didn't buy him?

Spending money is not the object people. Bringing in good players is. If you can do that for free, why on Earth would you pay for someone? Spending =/= good signing. Just take a fricking look at QPR. Hell, take a look at Fae & Halford.

Agree that spending money is not the object. But what causes cynicism is when the club continuously make noises about preparing to spend big, and then not doing so. I'm sure you'd agree that spending £2.5m (your Mariappa example) is not quite sufficient preparation for the Premier League, unless your aim is to come back down.

Can't remember the club ever saying that - what they do say is they're looking to add quality to the squad, and people construe that as them saying they'll be spending big bucks...
