RUMOUR : Non-league duo

by Sutekh » 18 Nov 2015 12:35

Reading Chronicle Reading FC are being linked with non-league duo Dan Sweeney, 21, of Dulwich Hamlet and Tower Hamlets youngster, Randell Williams
.

football league world Dulwich Hamlet’s midfielder Sweeney and Tower Hamlet’s winger Mitchell met up with Reading earlier this month and now they have linked up with Reading for training – they are both in on a trial basis and no contracts have yet been signed.

21-year-old Sweeney has been in fine form with seven goals for Dulwich and there were many clubs chasing him but Reading look to of moved into pole position – whilst Williams who is an ex-trainee with Tottenham is just 18 and delivered some scintillating performances at non-league and has many scouts chasing him but Reading lead the chase.

Have seen Hamlet a few times this season - Sweeney is comfortable on the ball, good to watch and clearly has an eye for goal - he's a footballing midfielder not a grafter

These sort of signings normally have me cringing but Liburd's come out of non league and shown considerable promise, so why not. Our scouting seems to be quite on the ball at the moment.

I totally agree, there is no risk whatsoever in taking a look at these guys, and you never know, one day we may strike lucky
And a big "here here " on the scouting network, long may it continue.

'One day we might strike lucky' - you sound like you think we've never found players from non league who have proved successful !

I guess your correct, but the further we move up the ladder the tougher it is to find that nugget that would adapt at championship level or higher. I must admit i was only thinking on the lines of the English non league pyramid, i know we have managed to grab some amazing Irish players from their respect league over the years, Doyle & Long spring to mind.

We got Antonio from Tooting for next to nothing and he's gone for a few quid since !

Poor example as we didn't exactly benefit from him.

But a perfect example of a player that can be plucked from non league obscurity and prove himself to be good enough to play at Championship level and above.

Plus we did benefit from him, if only financially.
And we would have benefitted on the pitch had he not emerged at a point where there was no opening in the team.

And he hadn't under-performed badly when he did get the nod.

I love this type of signing too - Trevor Senior and Robin Friday come to mind when Reading non-league transfers are mentioned.
