Snowflake Royal If we didn't have Howe, yeah no probs with that. But Howe is not going to get much game time whilst Gunter is sitting as back up, so for me, we either decide Howe isn't going to make it and offer that (much) reduced deal, or it's bye to Gunts.

Other option is to give Gunter a one year extension, and send Howe out on loan - he'd get more football that way. It's rare enough for Yiadom to be injured, and you don't take full-backs off after 60 minutes unless you're changing formation. So he'd spend most of the season bench-warming, bar maybe a couple of cup games, which isn't going to help his development.
However, I can't imagine Gunter would want just a single year, especially knowing his football-time would be limited. Certainly not with a massive paycut as well.

Depends on what other interest there is in Gunter. Didn’t seem much interest in him during the summer. Agree though a one year deal would be the maximum we should offer. Loan out Howe to hopefully a League One side and see how he does.

Westwood52 I am told Baker is back at Chelsea.
Strange he has played his best football at Reading.
Maybe like Ovie he likes to be close to home.
I would have him back in a heartbeat.
To be honest given the available funds wouldn’t be interested in anyone else.

I’d have him back too but he wouldn’t get in the XI at present times and it may further push Rino down the pecking order

Of course though, we’re one bad injury away from having Ryan East as our bench midfield option so perhaps cover is needed in that position. Unless Bowen thinks Olise is mature enough to play a deeper role but from yesterday’s showing, not sure myself at his stage of development

According to transfermarkt baker is out of contract in the summer. Would be a perfect fit to fill in Adams spot when he goes in the summer. Offer them 500k now and get him permanently. Would be gutted if he went somewhere else.

Allegedly, clubs wouldn't buy because they didn't see why they should have to - given his public exile, as far as they were concerned he should be available on a free. There were definitely a couple of loan deals on offer, but these didn't work out because they didn't want to pay full salary (again, why should they), Gunter wouldn't take a pay cut (similarly, why should he) and the club wouldn't subsidise.

I don't know whose idea it was, that public exiling, but it was very counter-productive in terms of actually getting players to leave. Might work with a young player who is desperate for game time, but not with established players

As a free-agent there's likely to be much more interest on both sides in moving on.

Think you make an awful lot of sense in your last couple of posts.

Sutekh For reference, discussion and rumours about signing, retaining and releasing

Loans ending

Judilson Mamadu Tuncara Gomes (Pele)
Lucas Boye
Joao Virginia
Matt Miazga

Players out of contract

Vito Mannone
Chris Gunter

Ovie Ejaria is not included as there is a deal already in place with Liverpool that he will sign permanently with a Reading on 1st July 2020.

Tennai Watson is still a Reading player, he's on loan to Coventry (I think) and it's just to January, so presumably he's back with us again?

Edit: - Ignore that, his contract expires in 2021, not 2020

Yep, he's back. Saw him leaving the players' car park post-Blackpool on Saturday.

Hound
Southwoods an interesting one. The others can all go from that second list

Southwood has just got a new deal till summer 2021. Back on loan at Hamilton Academical, but I strongly suspect he'll be given the chance to claim the number 2 slot in the summer. Because otherwise what's the point of signing him for another year.

I am pretty sure that Southwood wants to play games and so he might not want to be a number 2 here - but securing him for a further year stops anyone else taking him for just compensation next summer.

If he does well for the rest of the season in the SPL I could see a further contract extension and a season long loan as a number 1 keeper to a League 1 side next time.

Thought that would happen. Sensible all round and definitely should be looking at that backup spot for next year

Wouldn't lose much sleep over any of those players leaving, maybe Obita if he stays fit.

As for Ejaria what if he declines our offer? Pretty sure he won't be short of interest. In these sorts of deals is a contract normally agreed with the player too at the time the deal between the clubs is made?

Yeah, it's not an option to buy, it's a done deal that goes through on a date in the future. It's basically just a legitimate accounting trick to get round FFP.

Sky Sports reports that Reading FC have withdrawn their offer to Danny Loader.

by Owlish52 » 25 May 2020 23:29

By Adam Goodwin - Last Updated: 25/05/20 11:08pm

"Reading have informed Loader they have withdrawn an offer of a new long-term deal, citing the unprecedented situation the club faces due to the coronavirus pandemic."

He wasn't likely to sign it anyway. Sad to see him go and wish him good luck in the future. I do not think he'll be happy, as I do not believe he's ready for PL action and may find the on-loan life uncomfortable.
