Had this sent to me by a friend, no idea if there's any truth in this or not

If he wants to come on a pay as you play contract for around £5k/week, I'd have him. Otherwise, a big no thanks.

Every time we get linked with an injury ravaged but talented signing, someone proposes a pay as you play deal. Is there any precedent for players accepting this? They would have to be incredibly desperate with no other offers. In Wilshere's case, he would probably decide it was time to make a permanent move into the media room after his involvement at Euro 2020. So my response to this rumour would simply be no.

The account is a joke Stockport fan account - you only need to look at 1 or 2 tweets to realise it is meant to be funny.

I would be beyond surprised if this summer of all summers we risk any wage budget on a player (though was expecting this thread at some point), who whilst fit now, is going to break at some point soon.

Bloody talented footballer though, who if fit, would likely be the most talented midfielder in the division but that is a massive IF.

Yes. Owen Hargreaves, Andy Carroll and John Terry are prominent examples.

A literal pay-as-you-play deal would break minimum wage laws, but in practice instead of £5k per game it would be something like £1k per week and £4K per game.

The advantage from the player’s perspective is that if he stays fit then he will earn more money than he could get if he was mostly being paid through salary. So it probably isn’t viable for us to make this offer to Wilshere, but it might be for another club to offer him £2k per week and £18k per appearance or something similar. That’s much more than he could make on a fixed salary. He’s only 29 and he played 19 games last season (18 after he joined Bournemouth) so I don’t think retirement is likely to be attractive to him.

i received some pelters for suggesting this last season, and he proved with his stint at Bournemouth he isn't finished yet

If we needed a CM i'd be tempted, but we don't.

If people are dismissing my shout for Harry Arter then the mere suggestion of Wilshere should be laughed off the table

Probably not a big deal, but it worries me that his surname is basically at best a typo or at worst a heinous misspelling of a county.

Exactly the same response as last time.

This is precisely the sort of signing we should avoid at all costs.

Position we have quality and cover
Awful injury record
Big name, used to big wages
Career in decline

Hard pass.

But if someone could guarantee he’ll have a promotion season before he reaches 31….

Typical armchair follower response which is what you are. He played for expenses at Bournemouth

Has had 2 serious injuries and deserves another chance somewhere

The last thing we need is another injury prone player. He has spent so much of his time out injured and isn’t getting any younger. He seems to be struggling to find another club and that is telling.
