January Window

by morganb » 13 Dec 2021 11:52

With the January Transfer Window on the horizon what transfer business do we expect Reading to do?

There's a bit of Club waffle here that doesn't actually say very much: https://www.getreading.co.uk/sport/foot ... e-22438601

What players do we expect to leave? As we know there are numerous players out of contract at the end of the season so do we think any will actually leave for a fee in January (for example Swift often gets linked to lower table Premier League teams). We will be actively looking to sell anyone (Raphael perhaps?) Contract renewals is probably a subject for another existing thread...

Do you think we will get any players in, either regardless of other transfer business or to replace outgoing players? Assume these would be loans rather than free transfers as there can't be many decent players available on a free (or do players often get released in January?) Are there any obvious loans we should try for (for example is there a ready-made Swift replacement sat on a bench somewhere?)

We will sell anyone that we get a realistic offer for, Swift will probably go for sure.

Can see Carroll staying until the end of the season.

Thats about it.

Think the club will look to use whatever leeway they have to try and bring in one or two on loan if no more than to cover the ridiculous injury problems. If Swift could be sold for a million or so then maybe even get someone permanently from a PL Academy or something.

As has been said by VP, we will be reactive rather than proactive - any deals will depend on players heading out and cheap options being available. It may be a busy window but if it is, it will be the back end of the month.

Hope we get a left back on a short-term loan. Ideally we sell Rafael, but not sure that’s realistic. Otherwise, shrug.

Swift currently working his bollox off to see out the season with us. Injured and 1 goal in 14 after 7 in 7

A decent medical team perhaps.

TalkReading quoting a Brazilian media saying Rafael free to go in Jan. Which makes sense

actually bit more than that - tweet from them that translates as:

'Former Santos, goalkeeper Rafael Cabral negotiates contract termination with Reading'

So looks like we may even pay him off

If we can agree a fee that is less than his overall contract value then it will certainly be worth it, I'd suggest we then recall Andresson if we can who has lost his place at Morecambe.

Obviously not a promising sign for him but frankly Morecambe are a bit out of their depth right now in League One and the manager has swapped the keepers a few times without any real improvement on the defensive side, to me it suggests the true issue lies with their defence rather than either keeper.

yeah recall Jokull if we can

Does leave us vulnerable to a southwood injury as i imagine we couldn't get an emergency loan in if we did have Jokull? Not sure how CBC is getting on nowadays, think he went off on loan somewhere, but think he was knocking about when we played Hull

We would really need to ensure Andresson could return before letting Rafael go. If Southwood were to get injured it would be a big ask for CBC to step up.

Perhaps a loan keeper from the Prem would work out cheaper than keeping Rafael and be a safer option than our young keepers?

If we are negotiating wouldn't that mean we would be paying less than what would be left on his contract, on FFP terms thats a saving. Depending on what his signing on fee would potentially be we could be saving a fair chunk i reckon.

then if we can get a replacement on much less wages then he was on, its good business....or if we have Jokull step in even better business but much riskier.

On a different note - should we be looking at a short term loan for a LB. The Afcon cup looks like its gong ahead.

Who have we got on loan?

Drinkwater
Baba
TDB

is that it?

Not sure if we can add anyone else to the squad with the EFL rules, but maybe someone to cover Baba could be an option for 1 month

Could always make enquiries about emergency loans so we've got one ready to go, leave Andresson out on loan and use one if Southwood gets injured.

Cheapest option

suspect there are prob experienced free agents knocking about who could sit on the bench for a couple of grand a week tops tbh. Sam Walker types. If rumours are true on Rafa's 20k or so a week salary, will be a massive saving if we can move him out

Suspect we'll have to pay up at least 50%, so once you factor in a replacement it won’t be a huge saving. But every little helps.

If he finds a new club at a decent wedge it should look rosier

yeah obvs depending on what wage we can get off the books. ideal world would be 100% but suspect you're right it will land around the 50% mark
