So we replaced Southwood with someone who was a lot older but had the same weaknesses.

Lot younger, different weaknesses.

Hein was barely a footnote.

I wonder if we will end up going back for Hein for next season. He didn't do too badly in the short period he was here before he was injured.

Hopefully we do go for a more experienced shot stopper who is physical enough to deal with crosses.

Me too, but there are potentially worse options out there. I never felt comfortable with him in goal though really.

Southwood has been our best goalie this season. It's not by a huge margin, and he was playing better when he first got into the team than when he was dropped, but he was a bit better than a goalie who was responsible for three opposition goals in just 10 games, and didn't look as good at corners.

Agree.

I think a couple of bad errors, some targeting by the opposition made possible by horrendous defensive set piece coaching and some scapegoating by a poor defence led to a drop in form for an otherwise well performing keeper.

Ideally, we'd probably sign better, but we've signed worse twice now imo, so I'd rather give him a fresh start with more protection.

Seen on Twitter that Southampton are looking to bring in a new 'keeper. If Fraser Forster gets a new deal there, we'd surely be able to do a lot worse than trying to get McCarthy back on loan.

That is a good shout. Would be a vast improvement on what we currently have.

I'm assuming that Saints would look for a club that can afford to pay more of his wages than us.

i said it on the last page and will say it again

Brogue Goalkeepers are usually pretty easy to recruit, there will be plenty number 3's out there looking for first-team action and probably a few number two's too. just need to use the loan market well, if we can't sign anyone for a fee, then we will have to continue to utilise the out of contact market.

Alex McCarthy is ooc in the summer as is Fraser Forster from Southampton
Loris Karius and Adrian are from Liverpool
Begovich from Everton
Fabianski from west ham
Alex Smithies from Cardiff
David Button West Brom

Not saying we would get all the above but this is just an example of the number of keepers with significant English football experience that are available on a free in the summer, and the list above is by no means exhaustive.

For me personally, this Nyland hasn't shown enough to be our number one. And there are much better options out there. We shouldn't panic and give him a contract. We can do better.

Wages would be a big issue though in that case. Soton (or most of those teams with the aforementioned names above) would probably be subsidising a fair chunk of them wages.

If Alex McCarthy (now 32) is out of contract in the summer I would be on the phone immediately to see if a deal is possible. It possibly wouldn’t be but if you don’t ask you certainly don’t get.

If he's out of contract then we have zero chance as there will be a club that will offer him more money.

Maybe Hein will be fit again, and back to finish his loan off?

Hi Ian

(still out on loan to us according to Arsenal).

I think Matt Ingram is out of contract in the summer. Local lad too (Wycombe) so might be worth an enquiry.

Sheffield Wednesday's Cameron Dawson is 26 years old, 6' 4" and kept 19 clean sheets on loan for Exeter City, a prospect?

A lot of teams reportedly in for Michael Cooper of Plymouth with some sizable offers being suggested

I wouldn't mind Cooper, seems like he's had a decent season with Plymouth overall.

I reckon we will look elsewhere though for out of contract goalkeepers potentially. Matt Ingram would be worth a shout, I've mentioned Ben Foster elsewhere etc.
