BREAKING: MBENGUE ARRIVES FOR READING TRIAL

Senegal midfielder Amadou Salif Mbengue has arrived at Reading for a trial ahead of a potential transfer, SOURCES HAVE TOLD FOOTBALL INSIDER.

Mbengue, 20, is a free agent after seeing out his contract at Metz earlier this summer.

He made 12 Ligue 1 appearances last season.

Same agent as Naby Sarr. Hopefully that deal hasn’t fallen through. Fingers crossed this is just to bulk out the squad. As another CDM hopefully this doesn’t mean there are problems with Loum’s visa too…

Yeah I'd hope this isn't a Loum replacement, I'd want that deal to go through. Never heard of the guy before, but a young player who played at a decent level last season seems like it would be a welcomed addition on the surface, hopefully a trial period will provide more answers on that anyway.

Looks an interesting option

Doubt it’s anything to do with the Sarr or Loum transfers failing

I don't get the rationale that him having the same agent as Sarr means that has fallen through. If Sarr had been mucked about, would an agent really put another of his players into that same situation?

Especially as he knows there would be a big doubt over whether he'll get paid.

Amadou a typical thing for me and not contribute in any meaningful way to this thread.

Maybe the opposite ?
Sarr has gone through and he’s done us a BOGOHP for a second player....

Was kind of my point. It's more likely an agent is allowing another player to come over if the first player he directed towards us has his deal confirmed. If it is in doubt or about to crash, you wouldn't want to be starting the process again - you'd be looking elsewhere.

You could help me write his chant... so far I've got:

If 1871 can rehearse the actions this could be a winner….

That’s thinking too rationally  We are Reading; and it’s more likely the EFL won’t sanction a 4 year structured deal for Naby Sarr and we are instead being offered another client of his

Haha yes would work a treat. Reminds of that classic 80s tune... "Fade to grey".

Does look good but we will have Loum, Fornah, Tetek, Hutchinson etc who can already play at cdm. Do we really need another?

I guess the advantage that Amadou would have over the others on that list would be that he'd be a permanent signing who hopefully wouldn't be injured all the time.

If Hutchinson is seen as a central defender then this guy would give us 4 players for 2 positions (unless you count Hendrick as a defensive midfielder.....)

Well Hutchinson and Tetek are already injured and that’s before kicking a ball in anger so it would suggest another player who can cover CDM wouldn’t go amiss. Plus I think he can also cover at centre back for when that injury crisis arrives.

My initial reaction was what’s the point but upon reflection he could be a good signing. As pointed out above we need to have one eye on this season, plus continuity for next season.

Mind you, when the AFCON is played in early 2024 we might have a few players missing. Good news is we don’t have to worry about it this season.

Neither Sarr or Mbengue have been capped for Senegal and Loum only has 3 caps, so think we'll be ok.

Ideally you want 2 specialists for each position in a squad, if you can possibly manage it.

The 3-4-2-1 we seem to be going with needs 2 CDMs - so with Loum, Fornah, Hendrick and Tetek - you can argue that we have that but 3 of those are currently due to leave next summer, possibly all 4 if Tetek isn't offered/signs a new deal, so if he is decent and from the small amount of info out there he looks like he may be then getting him tied down for a couple of years means we won't have to totally rebuild midfield again next year.

 basic maths errors here

Everyone is forgetting the Reading FC Injury coefficient which currently stands at 7.26

So per position we are looking at 2 x 7.26 = 14.52 specialist players per position.
