Hound Yeah doubt we are well under budget either considering it took a while to sort out AC and Mbengue

We’re probably fairly comfortable given the unbudgeted cup income…..
Not rolling in cash, but that game will have made a significant difference given we were going to meet our commitments anyway.

Don’t we just have a set wage budget for the season? Would the cup income affect this?

I know you’ve read up on this a bit more than me but it thought we had a set 16m limit regardless of gates or transfer fees received

Nothing is ‘set’. The restrictions we were under on day 1 have been relaxed in several respects as our books have been brought back into shape. The cup income will improve our FFP performance, and whether we hit the business plan we agreed with the EFL. The £16 million wage budget isn’t set as a ‘punishment’, it was what theEFL and club agreed we could afford. So if we improve our income it woukd be reasonable to at least be able to consider stretching the wage budget. Whether that would be prudent is open to question, but the whole th8ng is an ongoing discussion.

Ok thanks. So potentially we could use a proportion of the cup income for player wages - if agreed with the EFL

Yes, the wage bill can't exceed 16m, even if we made 100m in transfers this year.

Naturally though, we are only 26 weeks away from the end of the restictions - so a player signing for say 3k pw would "only" cost 75k, so if there were some unlikely leeway in terms of numbers, unless we are pressing right up against that limit, then the wages may not be a problem.

I think the EFL will still have us jumping through hoops but with 3 of our top 5 earners OOC in the summer and a 4th subject to a mandatory purchase if they get promoted, it's clear we are doing everything in our power to get things under control.

Chuck in the £1m from the Utd game and the club may have some leveage

We could be - some of our players are earning less than Wrexham's according to Ince at weekend

I wouldn't take it as gospel or anything, but FM23 has the players that we signed permanently in the summer as earning £3k per week.

They made it up.

I thought as much - it was just nice to use as a indicator at least.

Utter drivel in the 72

‘Reading are interested in Nottingham Forest duo Lyle Taylor and Cafu, according to Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (31.01.23 11:56).

Reading were one of the busiest sides in the summer transfer window, bringing in a total of 15 players on permanent deals, all of which were on free transfers. A further five players also arrived on loan deals until the end of the season.’

Maybe.
The thing to remember is all the various restrictions are designed to make sure by the end of this season we have a sustainable budget. From what Iunderstand we were on track to do that before the United game happened. So in theory that is ‘free’ money. However we aren’t at the end of the season yet so I would be surprised if we even thought of blowing that on extra players beyond what we have agreed. But the £16m is part of a business plan and if we could demonstrate we had earned significantly more than planned there is no reason we could not discuss revising the wage budget with the EFL. They might not agree, it might not be the best use of the windfall…

Yeah it's probably not the best place to use any prize money or any transfer fees unless we really had to, probably best to wait until the summer.

Speaking of outgoings, apparently Everton are interested in signing Lucas Joao. That has Kia Joorabchian's name all over it.

Originated from the Daily Mail and they were right about Cesare Casadei

J Low:

Mail reporting Everton are looking at signing Lucas Joao from #readingfc.

Given the close connections between the two clubs, would say there is something in this so certainly one to keep an eye on over the next few hours.

Today is the last day Royals can get a fee for him, too

"Given the close connections between the two clubs" equals Kia

Everton have just come into an awful lot of money and do need a striker - he could do a job at PL level if he is interested. We might actually get a decent fee here if it comes off and would explain the supposed interest in Taylor.

It can be really handy having someone well connected with an affiliation to the club. Never really bought into the ‘Kia is evil’ line’

I have never really thought of him as "being the issue", he's just an agent trying to do his job. It falls on the person writing the cheques out for the players. I don't know how big an influence he's had at the club. The Athletic had a special report that once said that he was involved in "9 out of 10 transfers" of the club. Whether they were all his clients or not I don't know.

Having said that, whenever he's been involved at a club, it hasn't ended well. So whilst the owners are at fault ultimately, as has been mentioned with ourselves and others before, they have to look at who they take advice from. I don't exactly think he's a "good guy" in all this either.

Absolutely bizarre if Everton do sign Joao, he is good on the ball and with hold up play but that only works if they have someone who can feed the ball to him.

If they're expecting a big, strong striker they can lump the ball up to they sure are gonna be disappointed.

Frankly both Carroll and Long are suited to our style of play more than Joao and so if Everton are willing to make a reasonable bid, I think we should take it. I know the money is no use this window, but it will be helpful reshaping the squad in the summer.

I tend to agree with an earlier post that as a third choice Ehib couldn't do much worse than Joao has done so far this season, as Joao has in the main only come on as a sub in recent games and only has 5 goals in 22 Championship appearances (11+11).

Something for the summer really, it’s certainly not going to happen in one afternoon with so many moving parts needed.

With 6 months left on his contract and his current form i would be happy to let him do one on a free!! and free up some space for another midfielder.
Saying that, if Everton are crazy enough to offer 2 million I'd rip their hand right off :D :D in the right team and set up Joao is a class finisher, we just aren't that team at present.
