Burnley fans picking up on our negativity...

by BarryWhiteRFC » 08 May 2009 10:53

Just seen this thread on a Burnley message board;

http://boards.footymad.net/forum.php?tno=104&fid=297&sty=2&act=1&mid=2126103141

I hope every one going to Turf Moor is going to be positive and really get behind the team to shut them up. Non-stop singing for 90 mins.

I appologise for the rubish content of this post, just reading our site, then reading that thread really annoyed me.

Lets make some f**king noise!

This was a good thread until I saw that Spacey had posted in the other forum.

I cannot view the link but lets just say that the support taken to Norwich should turn up.

If you want my opinion, I think that SSC and co are keeping things nice and cool. Let the dingles big themselves up. Hopefully they will be over confident and if we go into the game as underdogs then I think that will suit us.

Expressed as a percentage, how many times have the team that just missed out on promotion gone on to win the playoffs?

For the last three years the team that came 3rd in the Championship has gone on to win promotion via the play-offs, but that's not what you were asking so I'll shut up.

well we finished 4th not 3rd so we arent the ones who"just" missed out
and secondly i think the 3rd place playoff syndrome is vastly overhyped, and snowball will tell you its more likely to go up from 3rd, at least in recent years

Didn't both us and the Blades missout on promotion by 2 goals ?

They needed us to score 1 and to score one more themselves.

We needed to score 2 ourselves.
So we both missed out by the same amount of narrowness.

Ah didn't realise. I would be interested to see the percentage - I imagine it's not vastly different from 25%, 25%, 25% and (you guessed it) 25% for those teams finishing 3rd-6th.

I guess what I'm saying, perhaps for the first time, is that the playoffs are a bit of a lottery.

I should become a pundit.

Why are the playoffs a lottery? Genuine question, I read/hear that a lot, but this is about XI v XI, not the toss of a coin.

Genuine answer - Over the course of 46 matches there were only a few points one way or the other seperating the four teams - yet their final fate is decided by 3 matches, which given the prize involved adds a huge amount of pressure to the ties.

I'd say that the play-offs were more like a butterfly, as soft and gentle as a sigh. The multicolored moods of the play-offs are like its satin wings.

Over 46 games one incident is unlikely to have a massive effect on where a team finishes. You can lose a game againstthebottom tem and still win the title. You can miss 6 penalties in a game and lose to an offisde goal 8 minutesinto time added on and still make the playoffs.

In the playoffs you've got next to no 'second chances' - have one bad game and you are out. You need all the cards to fall for you and the team with the most luck is probably more likely to go through than the team with the most skill.

Good job it's players who can actually play the game rather than the experts in the stands innit.
