Shouldn't be that much of a surprise really, Man Utd, Chelse and Liverpool who all played reserves sides in this competition are all out because their squads aren't as strong as they were a few years ago. Can't afford to do it anymore simple as that.

From BBC

2149: West Ham's Jonathan Spector: "We wanted to work hard and give it a go today. We knew we were the underdogs but we also knew things could go our way if we put the work in. Playing in a new position enabled me to get forward a bit more tonight and it's fantastic to get a couple of goals." And striker Carlton Cole: "I'm looking to improve on my performances, definitely, and this is a start. (New assistant) Wally Downes is having a real impact, he's got us working together as a team, and hopefully this week can prove a real turning point for us this season."

Still, Liverpool shouldn't have been beaten against Northampton.

No that's a pretty horrific result. All the bigger sides don't quite have the strength they did a few years ago.

This how it feels to be City, this is how it feels to be small, this what it feels like when your team wins nothing atall...NOTHING ATALL.

Ferguson needs to look at his second string defenders. Evans is not good enough and will no doubt end up at Sunderland and the jury is still out on Smalling although he has done much better than I expected since he went there. I don't know what happened to Wes Brown as a used to think of him as a half decent centre back but he has lost it somewhere and could be a neighbour of Evans in the North East soon.

I don't like West Ham much but it's not often it is good to see Fergie's face and last night it was funny to see his miserable mug under that ski hat. Talking of miserable faces Avram Grant seems to have the Midas Touch in cup competitions although I know he couldn't have done it without Wally.

The way Cole turned around Evans for his second(?) goal was just amazing. It was like Evans wasn't there - not what you'd expect even from a second-string defender at a club like Man Utd.

Wes Brown must be livid having the clowns O'Shea and Evans picked ahead of him.

Still only lost one this season, and are top of the league.

Sure - but it only matters who's top at the end of the season.
