Could Mass Sarr have played in the Premier League?

by SpaceCruiser » 21 Oct 2012 11:45

You may remember Mass Sarr from 15 years ago. He made his arrival by showboating at Wrexham and then lighting up Madejski Stadium's first ever game. But after that, it all went downhill. I was a fan of Mass Sarr, but I didn't like the way he left Reading, moaning about the way he was treated by Alan Pardew and generally showing the world that he had a big ego. I think his problem was that he hadn't got over the death of his baby....

Anyway, I was just wondering if he didn't have the ego and knuckled down, could he have played in the Premier League?

Yes. He and Keith Scott could've fired us up the leagues if they'd just been given the opportunity.

Keith Scott! Probably one of the worst players I've seen to play for Reading and the fee we paid for him was a joke! Outrageous that Tommy Burns hid the truth about how much we paid for him.

If Spacey is actually serious....

Sarr had good technical ability and who knows how far he could have progressed if he'd had a good coach and the right conditioning etc. Sadly football is littered with players who have the tools but don't use them to their full potential.

I don't know how much more Reading could have done with him considering he was already 25 when we signed him, but if he'd been spotted at 18 and put in to a modern day Premier League academy meh, maybe.

Actually just noticed he was at Monaco when Wenger was there... so maybe an example of him having another chance that he'd just thrown away.

If they have a Premier league on the Isle of Man, he could have played in that.

Heard something a while back from a former pro who suggested there were a huge amount of people in the pro leagues that had the ability to make it at the top but the vital difference was mentality. Some cope with pressure, some don't, some are taught to prepare properly mentally, some aren't.

Ideal
Wimb football is littered with players who have the tools but don't use them to their full potential.

Just look at John Carew, did well in the champions league final a few years back, then when playing for Lyon he backheeled a goal against Real Madrid, and in the return leg made a complete fool of Cannavaro for what was a brilliant goal, threw it all away and was released last season by West Ham, and is now without a club.

If only he wasn't such a lazy buffoon.

Also scored a hat-trick to knock us out of the FA Cup :'(

Ronaldinho is another that springs to mind, going from the world's best player to also-ran within a couple of seasons.

I imagine the problem for some of these players is that they get to the top based on technical ability but after a while the opposition suss it out and then they just haven't got the work ethic or drive to adapt their game.

Ryan Giggs is a great example of a skill/flair player that's constantly adapted his game over the years to stay at the top, others like Carew, Ronaldinho etc just burn brightly for a short period then fizzle out.

Of course he could have played in the Premier League. Once.

Same as I could have done. But as soon as the game started he, like I, would have been found out and taken off PDQ.

Ah Mass Sarr, the original Mathieu Manset

I can remember he scored/set someone up with a backheel in a game at the Madstad, instantly gave me the impression he was going to go on to good things  who it was against I haven't got a scooby

But in reponse to the OP, he was playing the season I started supporting the club and Sarr, Casper and Caskey were the players I thought were the best at the club and destined for big things

My old Grandad could have played in the Premier League with only marginally less success and problems than the inconsistent and elusive Mr Sarr (the latter who I saw play a number or times for us) - let's let this sleeping dog lie.
