Reading road names shortlisted

by SPARTA » 04 Feb 2013 21:53

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-21327605

A shortlist of new road names for Reading has been published.

Among the names are late Reading FC goalkeeper Steve Death, Reading FC chairman Sir John Madejski and the Reading Festival.

BBC Radio Berkshire presenters Andrew Peach and Phil Kennedy are also on the list to be approved by the council.

The council said the names should "reflect the culture or history of the town or honour a personality with a close link to Reading".

Reading borough council received 49 suggestions and has recommended 27 for approval at a Planning Application Committee meeting on Thursday.

Other names include:

- Andy Alleyne - Reading FC's first black player
- Limerick - to celebrate Reading's Irish community
- Matrix - the former Reading nightclub
- Private Fred Potts - the only Reading man to win a Victoria Cross medal
- Oscar Wilde - Poet and author incarcerated at Reading Gaol
- Per Jonsson - Reading speedway team and world champion

I can't believe there's no mention of Steve Coppell or Robin Friday?!

Interesting! Although I guess Friday wasn't mainly reading having played for Cardiff too? I don't know.

Alleyne sounds cool. I don't know much about our first black player. Any stories about him? Did he get racist abuse?

we already have TGIF's
Andy Alley has a ring to it (no racial abuse that I can remember 2ww1wc, but there was a tendency to pick him out on the pitch)

Limerick can fook right off along with any streets named after our local councillors

Oscar Wilde? He was Irish and only came to Reading for being a bum boy. Hardly worth honouring.

But BBC Berks presenters? oxf*rd off!
They are average radio presenters of the moment locally, they have no large significant impact on the history of the town!

Hey I'm in no way pro gayness and certainly not pro gay marriage but come on, bum boy is needlessly offensive. And the poor chap was imprisoned for his sexuality. A very big deal we (as a nation) need to be ashamed of. Definitely worth remembering.

I'm looking forward to Wilde Way, Alleyne Alley, Limerick Lane and Glenville Close.

2 world wars, 1 world cup Interesting! Although I guess Friday wasn't mainly reading having played for Cardiff too? I don't know.

He got quite a bit of racist abuse including quite a bit from a minority of our lot too, you know, the usual big mouths that try and amuse those around them. A few monkey noises, monkey impressions, verbal stuff, and this is going to sound silly, but it was done in so called 'good natured fun'. Andy scored a goal on his debut but they still carried on. It was like that in those days.

Kebe Drive. The best road in the whole of Britain. It might even bring a sandy beach, palm trees and beautiful women to Berkshire. Kebe Drive - it does what he wants
