BFTG - Ipswich

Williams awesome when he came on. Guthrie, superb range of passing. Le Fondre did as well as he could do when a lot of the balls to him were too high and long. Drenthe was the mutts nuts and will get better, he loved his song too (applauded twice but it was mostly missed first time), McCleary always dangerous but better suited to the right side, McCarthy solid but can't kick a football to save his life.

First half was dire, second half greatly improved.

McCarthy - 8
Bridge - 7
Morrison - 6
Pearce - 7
Gunter - 6
McCleary - 7
HRK - 6
Guthrie - 8
Karacan - 6
Drenthe - 8
Le Fondre - 7

Subs:
Williams - 8

Very disappointed with Ipswich. Made some good signings but looked far from a top-half side today, and I have them down for top six. Tabb was by far and away their best player; good goal and showed vision too.

BFTG - Ipswich

Very much a tale of two halves.

First half we were nervous and resorting to McD style hoofball. On the rare occasions we got the ball on the deck we looked dangerous.
Clearly had the hair dryer treatment at half time as we looked like a good championship outfit. Knocking it around, not afraid to play
a short pass to someone who had a player close by and creating more chances.

Thought McCleary was poor and Pearce is a weak tactical link. I'll explain with the ratings.

Williams needs to start the next game imo as he looks quality.

McCarthy 8 - No mistakes great saves and commanded his box well. Clear Number 1.

Gunter 6 - First half looked poor but much better second. Got forward well and his confidence grew.

Morrison 7 - Surprised he was captain but he was good today. Won everything and was there for the goal. Although
he really shouldn't dribble with the ball forward!

Pearce 5/6 - Defensively he is great, but he can't pass. How many times was Guthrie, Drenthe and McCleary screaming at him
when the short pass was on. I like the boy but he really is a weak tactical link in the way we play now. He needs confidence
in his ability to play the short pass. In second half when we were cruising for 15mins or so and knocking it around confidently
but when it came to Pearce he would hesitate and hoof it.

Bridge 6 - bit of a hoof merchant but got better and despite his lack of speed he isn't afraid to get forward.Good second half from him.

McCleary 6 - Big fan of him but he was disappointing today. 1 decent flick and cross for the goal but that was it.

Karacan 7 - You could see he was instructed to sit, clear up and get the ball to Guthrie. He did it really well today.

Guthrie 9 - Comittment, Quality and Desire. He was always looking for ball and you just felt he was going to create something every time he had it.
Deserved the goal and that ball he put for HRK...Wow.

HRk 6 - He was ok but you could tell he hadn't had much of a pre-season. I think once he is up to speed he will be destroying full backs.

Drenthe 7 - Flashes of sheer brilliance and he oozes confidence. Not afraid to take someone on. Unlucky not to score but the ball just
didn't fall quick enough for him. Definitely going to be a fan favourite. Did you see that move down the left in the second half from McCleary's flick? More of that please!

Alf 6 - Did the best he could. We really need to stop hoofing to him but that will come with time. Looked dangerous when he had the ball.

Subs

Williams 7 - He wasn't on for long but looked a different class. Would start in place of HRK for next game. Looked to be playing
as a box to box mid when he was on.

Pog - his contributions were to lose the ball but he wasn't on for long.

McAnuff - couldn't really give him a rating but looked committed. I would have started him ahead of HRK based on the Swansea game.

Adkins 9 - His tactical changes seem to spot on and actually make a difference. I can see us rotating the attack this season but keeping a
regular back bone at the back and with Guthrie in the middle.

Drenthe was superb, and Williams made the difference when he came on. Good pace, taller and we started winning balls in the air, and his passing was excellent too. Guthrie's goal was superb also. Great start to the season!

MOTM - Guthrie

Drenthe will be a monster once he's fully fit, he was brilliant today.

First half was the complete opposite of the second. We'll need to be better at Bolton next week. Can't wait!

Overall positive I think. Better teams than Ipswich may have punished us more for that sluggish spell in the first half, but I think the equaliser just before HT was vital and I could only see one team winning it the second half.

As expected the wing play was strong (in the second half, anyway) with some great link ups between McCleary and Drenthe and some very positive movement from HRK. Centre mids looked comfortable on the ball although they could perhaps do with refining some of their long balls, many of them didn't appear to have the legs to reach the intended recipient.

Don't feel at all safe with the back 4 passing it amongst themselves, particularly Morrisson and Pearce but to be fair they did their primary jobs and defended fairly well.

Long way to go and no doubt they'll be some dodgy moments with a fair bit of frustration and disappointment, but a good way to start the season.

P.S - to the mongs booing when we were 1-0 down, it's not necessarily a bad thing to shift the ball backwards in order to keep possession. I bet you were booing the more direct style we had last year too. That was the first game of the season, things go wrong. Can't you give the PROFESSIONALS on the pitch and in the dugouts at least a few games to do their jobs before writing them off? Thanks.

Agree Ipswich were poor. They moved the ball about well but I expected more from them considering they've made some good signings this summer. We were dogshit in the first half but much better second half and we looked a threat every time we broke forward.

Guthrie was a different class, as was Big Willy when he came on. Drenthe could turn me homo with a simple hello.

Great result, and all the sweater to ram the cocky bullshit back down Ipswich's throats on their big day out!

The same as everyone else. Just because I have a different take on things doesn't make it wrong.

Drenthe was absolutely brilliant in spurts today. He's still some way from full fitness but what a player!

I'll forgive the shocker of a first half and put it down to nerves. We will grow in confidence and move it about better as we get a few games under our belts.

Pleased to see McAnuff dropped. No offense to him, but he's not even our second best winger and others deserve a chance.

Yes, Mcanuff on the bench was both a surprise and a good move in my opinion. McCleary is better, though he should be on the right and Drenthe on the left; and HRK is also better than McAnuff if played out wide which although he may prefer a central role, he is more suited to. Adkins has proved he's got some nuts on him, and it's good to see.

Really happy with that performance. 1st half bit crappy but a rocket clearly delivered up their collective backsides at half time & we looked a different team.

Guthrie was by far the best player on the pitch & that was before he scored. Drenthe looks like he could be amazing & Williams looked good too.

Bit  at Morro being captain & was a tad upset not to see Jobi start. Thought HRK was relatively anonymous today but we'll get better.

Some of our fans really are thick. To sing to Ipswich "How sh*t must you be if Tabb's your best player" and then barely 30 seconds later "Jay Tabb's too good for you".

And for those that booed Jobi when he came on - shame on you, you complete w@nkers.

Feeling very optimistic and we'll only get better as the season goes on.

Can't say much more than what was said on the radio: started well, went a bit off after their goal but superb 2nd half.

McCarthy - 7 - some great saves and commanding in the box - but never really seems comfortable with the ball at his feet
Gunter - 7 - solid
Pearce - 6 - don't feel comfortable when he's passing the ball but won a lot in the air as expected
Morrison - 7 - commanding
Bridge - 7 - same as Gunter really but looked a real pro and got forward well.
Karacan - 7 - kept things ticking along
Guthrie - 9 - MOM by a mile. Was all over the pitch
Robson-Kanu - 6 - didn't see a lot of him - got in the box well
Drenthe - 8 - Prefer him out wide but he was explosive and will continue to be exciting this season. Great character.
McCleary - 7 - could of done better with a couple of breaks but though he gave their right back all sorts of problems today
Le Fondre - 6 - not a lot he could do. Got dominated for most of the game

Williams - 8 - really good when he came on - burst forward superbly
McAnuff - 6 - wasted time well - but a few crosses in
Pog - 5 - did oxf*rd all really - looked really unconfident

Wasn't too happy with the glut of substitutions late in the game when we were playing at our best, it seemed to effect our rhythm and put us on the back foot.

First half was poor, reminiscent of the Rodgers era, but got the goal before half time - cracking cross from McCleary and fair play to ALF for winning the header.

Second half was a totally different story; we were all over Ipswich who looked totally outclassed and panicked whenever the ball came near them. I'm totally ghey for Royston who is a class above everyone else when on the ball, Williams looked like he could be similar.

Thought the defence looked solid but McCarthy, Pearce and Morrison don't look particularly comfortable on the ball which doesn't help when trying to pass it out from the back. Thought Guthrie was good but not MOTM, quite a few wayward passes and waving of arms, he also seemed to throw his toys out the pram a bit with Gunter in the first half which is never nice to see. Didn't really create enough chances, still think we could do with one more signing, attacking mid/striker area.

All in all though happy days. Expected a slow start and we really turned it on in the second half. Bring on Bolton.

First half - a fairly even game, Ipswich possibly just the better side
Second half - we were all over them

A really deserved win.

McCarthy - 6 - some good saves, but poor kicking and some very dodgy short throws
Gunter - 7 - did a pretty good job
Bridge - 7 - as with Gunter, did what was required of him
Morrison - 7 - didn't notice him much, but what I did notice was pretty good
Pearce - 6 - did his job, nothing special though
Karacan - 7 - looks like a different player under Adkins, expect to see him improve even more
Guthrie - 8 - mostly excellent, made some absolutely fantastic moves, but some very stupid moves as well
McCleary - 7 - did a good job
Robson-Kanu - 7 - expect to see him improve as he gets fitter
Drenthe - 9 - excellent, MOTM, love him already
Le Fondre - 6 - did what he could, but he was very isolated a lot of the time, and he's way too short for long balls

Williams - 8 - looked like an outstanding footballer, fair play for playing football at the end instead of time wasting, would've been a 9 if he'd played the whole game
McAnuff - 6 - didn't do much
Pog - 5 - an absolute donkey

A good job in general. Ipswich were surprisingly poor though, but Tabby played great.

Fair play to Ipswich fans for turning out in such big numbers, but the noise from them was very poor. The noise from us was pretty decent, especially in the second half. Drenthe's chant is the one!

Dominated first 15, conceded sloppy goal, lost our heads but managed to pull it back. 2nd half much better, kept the ball, constantly proving and deserved the win. Good balance, good shape, good new additions, positive signs all round really.

Mcarthy-7 one great save
Morrison/Pearce 6 fannying about in the box for their goal, otherwise solid.
Bridge/Gunter 7 solid at the back, offered something going forward.
Karacan 6 anonymous in first half, better 2nd.
Guthrie 7 awful first half, like last season, but fair play he grabbed the game by the scruff if the neck 2nd half. Good goal.
Drenthe 7 looked good.grew into the game, and when we were pushing for the win worked really hard and looked dangerous.
Kanu -6 anonymous, few nice touches
Mcleary 8 - excellent, caused problems cutting in, and crossing, made stuff happen
Alf 7 did his job and scored, worked hard, did little else

Pog 6 meh
Jobi 6.5 did ok
Williams 7 looks the business

Also on Ipswich - I thought they did very well defensively. Looked a bit like us last season when we went 4-5-1 under Brian re-Swansea. Bearing in mind they were a complete mess before McCarthy came in, he's done very well. Like Mills said on the radio - they'll not score a lot but won't concede a lot either.
