RoyalinBracknell I'd like McDermott back. He did a great job for us in each of his Championship seasons and I think would find a pragmatic balance to get the best out of our squad. I think we've underachieved so far this season - we know McDermott can be successful at this level, is able to adapt a style of play to suit the players he has, and when on a good run is able to sustain that.

There was one main transfer window in the Championship when we gave McDermott particularly good financial backing and he got us promoted three months later. I'd back him to get the current squad into the top 6.

Whoever we get in needs to be a strong appointment though. We've now sacked our last 4 managers and are looking for our 4th manager in less than 3 years. I don't think that's generally going to lead to success.

+1

Brian's teams never sat back on a 1- 0 lead, they tried for another goal !

(Would also be happy with Coppell to the end of the seaon - not happy at prospect of Pearson)

Yep, he couldn't adapt, even though he told us how he was learning every week.

We "couldn't hack it in the Prem" because we didn't have the money to buy players good enough to play better football.

That's usually because they were busy coming back from being 0-1 down, so 1-1 wasn't enough.

So perfect for us at the moment

We certainly spent money - unfortunately it was the owner mainly splashing it around on strange signings and not the manager. Ironically I think we played better footie (more enjoyable?) back then, even though we lost more (maybe only just). The Arsenal 7-5 game was a great night even though we lost, WBA 3-2 on the Saturday followed by 2-2 Chelsea on the Tuesday. We seemed to score (more) goals in those days.

That might strangely be quite good - it would be make losing matches a bit less painful as I could blame it all on him.

Lenny The Tramp Horses for courses.

We need a manager who knows how to get promoted from the championship. It's Warnock or Pearson.

And if you don't believe me, have a look at what Brighton are doing. Their squad is not great, but their manager has previous when it comes to getting out of this division at the right end.

Bingo.

Dont get all the Warnock hate though (sorry - newbie'ish)

Billy Davies? Don't think he's working at the moment and has an excellent record in the champ. Ian Holloway too. Paul jewells another, good promotion with Wigan. Phil brown is doing pretty well at southend at the moment as well?

Some excellent managers out there, hopefully the board are smart enough to see that.

Should be a three horse race for me: Mick McCarthy, Nigel Pearson, Phil Parkinson. Would have included McDermott, but don't think he is the man to build us up, and never think it's a good idea to hire an ex-manager (although there are exceptions). McCarthy could be out of the question as seems happy at Ipswich, however, you never know, he might be tempted. Pearson would be good but don't think we will able to bring in his old staff from Leicester. Parkinson is easily my favoured choice, fits the Reading mould to a tee, we must give him time though if appointed.
