The Brits Abroad Thread

by Winston Biscuit » 31 Jan 2018 16:35

Thought we could have yet another bash at this as a few have moved recently.

Reece Oxford goes on loan to Borussia Monchengladbach
Liam Henderson goes from Celtic to Bari
17 year old Jadon Sancho also moved to Dortmund in the summer and has made a couple of appearances for them so far.

Will add more when I get the time but busy right now. get your Brits abroad in here folks!

Surprised Monchengladbach bothered with Oxford again, he only played three times in the first half of the season.

Ryan Gauld moved from Dundee United to Sporting Lisbon in 2014 as a 19 year old but has struggled - played mostly for their B side and is now on loan at CD Aves, albeit it still in the Portugese top division.

Another Scot abroad - Jack Harper was actually brought up in Spain and made headlines working through Real Madrid's youth team, but he didn't make the grade; loaned to Brighton he didn't play a game, he is now at Malaga and in their first team squad, albeit he hasn't played this season.

Kaylen Hinds (20) joined Wolfsburg from Arsenal in the summer, but has played only once in the Bundesliga.

Ryan Kent has returned to Liverpool from Freiburg after an unsuccessful few months, just 6 appearances.

And there's a few Brits in the MLS.

Jack Barmby, son of Nick, has played a season for Portland Timbers having failed to make it at both Manchester United and Leicester.

Ashley Cole is still at LA Galaxy, but only played 8 times last season. Laim Ridgewell is Portland Timbers captain, but only played 7 times last year owing to injury. He's 33 now.

Bradley Wright-Phillips of course discovered that is doesn't matter if you have a so-so career in England, he's now got 100 goals for NY Red Bulls over 5 seasons.

Here is a good database of players abroad
https://int.soccerway.com/players/players_abroad/england/

I followed an english player in Finland a year or two ago on the European thread as he went into the last game of the season and then won the league, yet now I cannot see it there. Same with Eric in Brazil, I know it was discussed on there but now a search brings up nada. :?

Apparently not, unless Wandsworth has moved.

Great to see young English talent go abroad and learn a new language- I’d never be able to do that myself. Hopefully in 10 years time it will be very normal for English players to play abroad, players learning different cultures can only help enhance the national team

Acording to Wikipedia, Adam Dickinson is no longer playing in the Vanuatu Premier League.

Can we assume his gap year finished?

That list includes managers because Steve Coppell's listed for Jamshedpur and he seems to have to continued his habit of signing players from his former clubs because Andre Bikey plays for them.

Not a bad start to Ademola Lookman's time at Leipzig - brilliant 89th minute winner.

England under 21 centre forward Chris Willock joined Benfica from Arsenal last summer. Plays for Benfica B in the Portuguese 2nd division.

Marcus McGuane obviously been talked a lot in the last few days too. 19 year old left Arsenal for Barcelona in January and played for them in the Catalan Cup during the week.

I read the other day about another youngster in, I think Germany, who they believe is eligible to play for England although nobody really knows for sure.

I can't find the article now, does anyone know who it is?

Doesn't stop many other countries doing much the same, although I'm not keen on mercenary players turning out for England myself.
