CountryRoyal Stranded Winston Biscuit pretty rare for the 2nd division team to win the relegation play off isn't it?
First time since Düsseldorf beat Hertha in 2012 and I think only the 5th time it's happened since the play-off was introduced in 1981. Other play-off promotion winning teams were Stuttgarter Kickers, 1.FC Nürnberg and Bayer Ürdingen.
Union's promotion will also see the first ever competitive East/West Berlin derby. Hertha and Union have only played once in a friendly 17 days after the wall fell.
It’s a cool idea and surprised it’s so rare, just shows the gulf. I reckon if they had such a thing here it would be much more even, in fact I’d even go as far as to say I’d expect the championship side to win more often than not.
You could be right, would probably have backed Leeds to beat Cardiff over 2 legs if it had been used this year.
It is strange that is so rare here. There is also a play-off between the 2.Bundesliga/3. Liga and in the 10 years that has existed it is 50/50.
2nd leg of that play-off is tonight Ingolstadt looking to avoid a 2nd relegation in 3 seasons lead Wehen Wiesbaden 2-1 after the first leg in Wiesbaden.
