CountryRoyal Brilliant. A ~1 in 4 striker is exactly what we need. Gomes is starting to piss me off signing all his mediocre Portuguese mates.

1 in 4 if you just look at the total games and not playing time (you can't score on the bench). When he is on the pitch, he hits the back of the net every 160 minutes or so.

So if he plays every game from here on in (and keep up that record) that would equate to about 22 goals.

Old Man Andrews Ask yourself why Sheffield Wednesday would be letting him go to a Championship rival, they don't rate him. Our supporters on Twitter seem to be getting very carried away with this deal, I am extremely pessimistic. That being said I hope he's a huge success here.

Most I have read accept they have to get rid of at least a couple of the 6 strikers they seem to have collected and don't want Joao to go but accept you can only sell players that other clubs want.

Most appear to prefer Winnall or Nuhiu going but there appears to be no interest in them

Yep, they had to sell someone (likely Rhodes will go as well) for their own FFP

I don’t think it reflects massively on him, and the fans generally seem to rate him.

I’ve watched him a few times and always rated him

To be fair he looked strong and scored a great goal against us only three days ago.

Apparently we've brought the fee down by waiving Hector's sell on fee, bringing down the amount Sheff Wed will have to pay Chelsea. Genius from Howe; maybe our shrewd way of operating is back.

CountryRoyal Tore us a new one today but tbh it looked like it was more to do with our own ineptitude.

Made him look like Lucas Moura.

His record is basically 1 in 3 over the past 2 years, as a bit part player. This is definitely an upgrade.

Yep, very glad the gourlay days of spending big money on average championship strikers are long gone.

Aluko 2.0. Transfer fee is ludicrous if true.

It's like groundhog day being a supporter sometimes.

Disagree. This guy plays in a position we have a clear need, and has the physical and technical attributes needed to be the focal point we need.

With Aluko, it was another winger/general forward when we already had quite a few options in that position. He didn't fulfill the striker role we needed.

I'll admit that, at the time, I expected Aluko to be an upgrade on McCleary and Popa etc. So I was wrong there; I could be wrong on Joao, especially given our history of big signings. But this looks like a risk worth taking in a position where there's a real need.

6ft 3.5" striker with a decent goals per minute ratio who can hold up play - we are screaming for a player like him.

He is also only 25 so still room to improve - where as Aluko was what 29?, coming off the back of one decent season and alread in decline. Very different transfers. It may not work out but this team needs a player of his ilk.

Hopefully he works out, but bit part player at a rival, never been prolific and regarded by some as lazy. Definitely sounds familiar

Aluko was a monstrous signing tbh. 7.5m for someone who they signed on a free the season before. 29 years old. 4 year deal taking away any need for him to perform. Basically an early retirement present. Dreadful stuff

We shouldn't just judge every signing against Aluko. Joao has sell on value, a good age, with good experience. Still plenty of time to improve. Fills a big gap in our side.

I think languid players like him look lazy whereas little 'uns scuttling around look busy and committed.
Glad that the club is making a signing and he will definitely bring something very different to the team.

A front three of Barrow, Meite and Joao is pretty rapid. A lot of defences won't like to play against that..

Joao is Sheff Weds joint top scorer this season.

He's also scored 1 goal with 1 shot. Cannot argue with those stats. Bargain.

Looks like we are paying 800k now with the remaining amounts being paid over the next few years.

So we have essentially re-invested the Bodvarsson money or some of the Stacey sell-on to get him in - as well as writing off the Hector sell-on to make the move happen.

Pretty damn good deal if true.
