tmesis I don't think I'd call Maskell a success either.

I thought that but looking at his wiki it's 72 apps and 99 goals  That cant be correct, can it?

Steve Moran & Billy Whitehurst were a big money pairing that both flopped badly.

You could also count players who were expensive in terms in wages, even if they didn't come for a big fee.

Overall though, if we ever "splash the cash" there's always a feeling that it's going to end very badly.

Agreed drenthe and pog spring to mind in regards to wages

Should be 26 league goals.

WestYorksRoyal
Sutekh
2 world wars, 1 world cup
And before that iirc Caskey at 750K. Ended up not a bad player.

“Big money” moves to Reading since 1985

Hurlock - success
Canoville - success
Curle - success
Moran - flop
Maskell - success
Meaker - flop
Caskey - success
Asaba - success
Butler - success
Lita - success
Halford - flop
Fae - flop
Aluko - flop
Joao - ?
Puscas - ?

All in all not too bad until 2005 but since then it’s been a bit of a disaster.

You missed Mills, who was a qualified success. Lita was pretty good; if he hadn't been in a squad of legends he'd probably be remembered in better light.

Lita...

In the league, he had a run of 6 goals in a little over a month from Boxing Day to the start of February. And that's basically it.

He left us with this image and very little else.

Other shit big money signings of that era should include Fae, Halford and probably Matejovsky at the very least,.

Bollocks. Lita and Matejovsky were definitely successes.

No, no they weren't.

6 goals in a month and a bit and literally nothing else? That's a success nowadays?

Matejovsky - one goal vs Liverpool, only ever played in about half the games available, off the pace throughout.

Cheers, Marek, thanks. Good one.

What was the (League?) Cup game where Lita "deliberately" ballooned his penalty into row Z in an apparent sulk about not playing League Games.

Had he scored we would've gone through.

?

Stoke away, 2008.

Wouldn't say deliberately but, fuck me, the state of that.

I mean he scored 20 goals for us so not quite literally nothing. Some massive goals as well.

Meanwhile, Kitson and Doyle did that (or close) in one season. 20 goals in three / four seasons isn't good for a striker.

As said, over four seasons.

11 in the league in the promotion. Broken ankle in March but that's still well down on Lita and Kitson. Promising, but remember he's a club record fee at this point.
Premier League season 1 - One good month. Nothing either side.
Next two seasons? One goal in each. Practically nothing? Cheers. Thanks for your efforts.
On top of that, throw in a relentlessly poisonous attitude in the dressing room.

It wasn't his fault though; the rest of the team simply weren't good enough to play with him. If their runs and movement off the ball were good enough to match his vision, there's little doubt he would have been one of our all time greats.

And you know that for a fact? Seemed to massively impact the 05/06 season particularly.

Yes, pretty much. Not in 05-06, but certainly from Summer 2007 onwards, when he came back from the U-21s in Holland that summer.

I see you've given up on defending his mediocre strike rate. Good to see.

Is that why he only played in about the half the games he could have done?

I love Marek but agree as a signing he was a flop as he just didn't play enough - remember a thread called 'Where is Marek' or something like that, where someone created a fake Marek diary ... it was funny and sad at the same time.

Matejovsky simply couldn't cope with the pace of the game. Technically decent, but wasn't up to the PL and couldn't hack the Championship.
