Snowball I used to watch Newport County (for decades) and we lost a lot of games,
eventually went out of the league and out of business.

But, because our expectations were low and winning was rare
(except for two glory seasons when we got to the quarter-final
of the European Cup winners cup, drew 2-2 away and lost 0-1
at home to the eventual finalists) I (sort of) enjoyed watching.

Been watching Reading since 2006. In the last few seasons, I felt like giving
up, or not renewing my season ticket because I was actually getting depressed.

I don't mean "not enjoying", I mean depressed.

There is not the slightest doubt that the soul went out of the club, and a lot
of the passion, (cue "The Reading Way"). Murts on Monday radio, everything,
the sense of a family club, TRW, an up-and-at-'em attitude, the relentlessness
of attacks under Coppell (win or not), characters like Doyle, the Hunts, Kitson,
Long, Ivar, Jimmy Kebe, Gunner, BIKEY!

Some of the games felt GLORIOUS, beating Liverpool 3-1, winning after Gunnar's
nutmeg and Long's goat at Anfield. Coming back from 0-2 in our first Premiership
game v Boro to win 3-2.

These felt like "live events", real memories, something special to tell the grandkids,
whereas our last three Wembley visits (Swansea, Arsenal, Huddersfield) were meh

It isn't just about accruing points or going a long way in the cup. It's about the way
you play, what you believe in.

But, as I said, when the money stuff started and the place filled with frauds and
mercenaries, then we discovered "possession football" (OMFG), ever so slowly I went
from joy through "not-so-much" to it being a bit of a grind going and then to the point
where I began to find even thinking about Reading as genuinely depressing.

If we hadn't slotted in that quite amazing McDermott championship-winning season,
I think I would have given up. For me that season trumps the 106

Lot's of things are "just entertainment". Sure football needs to entertain, but it's
something on top of that. It's tribal, about belonging, about a way of playing.

The Millwall way, West Ham (always quality football even if they didn't win), Burnley
producing kids and being a selling club, and hanging in at the top, Celtic v Rangers,
Liverpool-Everton, Arsenal-Spurs.

I dispute that Swansea was Meh - that was a great game. History has proved they had a good squad that year.

The Arsenal game wasn’t meh either. They had close to their best line up that day and we pushed them all the way. The Huddersfield game was appalling.

It was meh for me. Didn't say the football was terrible, and had Karacan's
post-hitter gone in, we'd've won. But I didn't enjoy the game (way too tense)
and thought Kish didn't give a ---

Not sure how to explain.

Sometimes you can be on top yet know you won't score (for example)

It just felt like we'd be whopped, and the feds mistake was horrible.

So I come away and can say "I was there" but there was no "joy"
in the game (not like, for example those two wins v Liverpool)

Like we got to 3rd and Wembley under Stam and I hated the season

I still remember the terriers Wembley thing with clarity and waves of boredom. They were a Mooy one-man-army, and we looked like a team that wanted to be somewhere else, ideally sandy with palms and WAGS.

Grey, flat drizzle completed the atmosphere. Worst sporting event I have ever spent a day on. On reflection, a loss to Charlton and an abject second half is definitely an improvement.

The equaliser in the Arsenal game was probably one of the most joyous moments I have ever had as a Reading fan.

Yep, me too. Hard to imagine any Reading fan there not feeling joyous at that moment.

And I really enjoyed beating Fulham to the play-offs.

Play off final was horrible tho.

I'm not explaining myself very well, here.

I was chuffed we equalised but I never for a second thought we would win,
and even if we'd made it to a shoot-out I expected us to lose that.

A MOMENT of joy, a quick woo-hoo!, isn't the same as a whole game
giving a feeling of joy/great excitement/pride.

The cup game at Liverpool, that had an unlucky goal against, a great
fighting performance, McAnuff's fantastic run, Gunnarson's nutmeg
and Long's headed goal... it had passion throughout, and in the end
we deserved our win.

The home game when we went 4-0 v Arsenal, THAT was joy. It was great
football, unbelievable. The joy is tarnished by the final result, but 5-7 and
I was there etc!

The wins at Saints and West Ham under McDermott, many of the backs-to-the-wall
games we then nicked 1-0, THEY brought joy (IMO, to me). They felt special, that
whole season did, because we out-did ourselves, we found something more.

IIRC (and I do) there was a belief that we were lucky against Southampton, as if it is lucky to go to the league leaders and score three goals. That West Ham game was one of the most enjoyable games in our history. Again beating a rival at their place, but such a hateable rival at that. I think its unfair to say these are your expectations, though. These were exceptional games in an exceptional year (both Southampton and West Ham have forged successful Premiership careers) No-one is expecting Gomes to recapture those feelings - we just want our footballers to play like footballers.

(And as a LOL aside, we traded those emotions for our current predicament because some clowns in our fanbase supported Danny Guthrie over McDermott. Danny bloody Guthrie, people)

LOLWUT?

I just don't get this.

Before the game, didn't give us much of a chance, as the game went on I believed more and more that we could win.

I get not being confident about winning, or thinking we were never going to take the lead. But going in to a semi against one of the major English clubs at Wembley, if you can't enjoy a hard fought narrow defeat pushing them all the way, I'm not sure why you'd bother going in the first place. Or support Reading at all tbh.

If you can't enjoy that defeat, you're going to be miserable for at least 30% of our games.

TBH, I think the Swansea side swipe is still the most egregious offence here. That was a truly exhilirating day. Disappointing ultimately, but pure sport. But, I suppose some people never back off from an opinion.

Yeah, Swansea was a fantastic game of football with a great atmosphere and a gut wrenching result.

Much like Bolton.

Games like those are why complaints about bandwagon jumpers and daytrippers are stupid.

It's games like those that make people hardcore fans coming back year after year. Everyone starts with a first game sometime.

How you (I) FEEL (or felt) is not an opinion.

I went to Wembley expecting to lose and I found the tension absolutely
awful (my first PO Final) and could not enjoy the football at all.

Then we were taken apart by a better team with help (if I remember right)
from Kishnavilli.

Of course it was a huge day out for me and family, but the disappointment
was IMMENSE. We were ripped one.

Yes, I know we almost got back into it, and Karacan's shot could have gone in.

But my mind-set then was that Swansea would have gone up the other end and scored again.

I can't help that I was disappointed, or that the game did little for me. That just "is".
