One87One Hughes played with a lot of heart and would run all day, but was bang bang average. He was a modern day Karacan.

Karacan was a brilliant player - energetic, great tackler, scored a few. I remember him saying on a podcast that Adkins told him we would’ve gone up in 13/14 if he’d stayed injury-free. He started the season really well & would’ve been better than Guthrie. I’m stunned Jem’s been mentioned in this thread at all!

Jay Tabb from that era was far worse - an embarrassment when we were in the Prem. Legs of sand I called him, as he played alongside Legs of Wood

You sure? Where's he now...? He had third division written all over him. A competent back up at this level only. Now at the level he's better equipped at.

I know football is all about opinions but this is another level.

Karacan was a key part of our promotion but then spent three years out injured. Those should have been the peak years of his career but he lost them. It’s no surprise that he’s not as good any more but we wouldn’t have gone up that year with a Third Division player in our midfield.

Half Horse If you suggested anyone other than Malcolm Swain then you are too young to have seen him "play"

Agree - and as someone else said Martin James from the same team runs him a close second

Nicky Colgan was a bundle of dross.

No mention for Tony Rougier? Worked hard but no end product, and the accidental OG v Walsall in PO final sums him up for me.

Ascotexgunner I noticed a couple of mentions for JVDB......How the hell do people get to that conclusion. He was one of the main reasons we finished third. I liked him a lot......Always committed and worked hard. Gave us a bit of bite at the back and although I preferred him as a DMF he wasn't as bad at CB as people made out. Seemed to like his cards a bit though....

I agree 100%. A very decent footballer, intelligent, composed on the ball, good vision, his problem was adjusting to the pace of English football, particularly as he wasn’t 21 years old. In terms of pure football ability though he should be nowhere near a worst player list.

In recent times, Dave Edwards is worth a mention

This.
Anyone who actually regularly watched Karacan play - but says he was crap, essentially is outing themselves as someone whose football opinons should be completely ignored. To be honest, they're like moon-landing conspiracy theorists. Just nod politely and stop listening.

I am sure Maguire was fishing. Unfortunately art imitates life.

grey_squirrel I know his name has already come up but surely Hope Akpan has to win this hands down. Not once do I ever remember him kicking the ball in the direction he intended to. Truly woeful. Whatever was Coppell thinking?

Honorable mention to Liam Rosenior. He might have got away with his totally limited style of play in Div 4 in 1974, but he was not a patch on his inflated ego.

Thought Rosenior looked good under Coppell and he had a good career after Rodgers released him.

Not only did Rosenior look good, saying he had an ego couldn't be further from the truth - a thoroughly humble and likeable chap.

We're talking about Liam, not Leroy.

Karacan was in no way shit. But he certainly wasn't especially good either.

Pretty much the definition of a bit above average.

Liam have an interview when he joined Ipswich where he said he didn’t think Reading had been very ambitious. In his defence we’d just replaced Doyle was Rasiak.

Probably another thread in itself but not worse player but player who failed to live up to expectations had to be Scott Murray.

Got to be Royston, surely? I remember when he signed, I couldn't believe it and was incredibly excited to see him play.
