MATCHWATCH : Huddersfield Town (a)

by Sutekh » 30 Dec 2020 21:56

When : Saturday 2nd January 2021, 3pm
Where : John Smith's Stadium, Huddersfield, HD1 6PX
Capacity 24,121

First game of 2021 is in view and it’s a long trek to West Yorkshire to play a side that has won their last 5 home games so yet another horribly awkward game to face for the injury hit Biscuitmen.

Huddersfield’s form is generally outstanding at home but rather less than any good away which means they’re floating around the halfway mark of the league table. However if they can solve their away form conundrum while maintaining their home form they could become very threatening to the play off places.

Fraizier Campbell is the obvious threat from Huddersfield and he has formed a good partnership with Josh Koroma and Isaac Mbenza to bag 13 goals between them so far. Add to that defender Naby Sarr’s height (6 foot 5) and you can also see the dangers posed by the Terriers at set pieces if things are allowed to get out of hand.

Huddersfield, like Reading, have suffered a bit with injury problems and currently Joel Pereira (shoulder), Tommy Elphick (knee), Adama Diakhaby (foot), Richard Stearman (hamstring), Josh Koroma (hamstring), Danny Ward (hamstring), Christopher Schindler (knee) and Kieran Phillips (knee) are all receiving treatment. Meanwhile, though there’s been a little improvement, Reading still may not have Joao fit and certainly won’t have Puscas or Meite so goal threat is going to remain a serious problem. John Swift and Omar Richards should be fit enough to return to the starting line though so there is a small amount of respite for the club.

Referee

Jeremy Simpson

Previously

28 Nov 2020 > Reading 3-1 Bristol City
29 Feb 2020 > Reading 2-0 Barnsley
30 Nov 2019 > Wigan Athletic 1-3 Reading
22 Oct 2019 > Queens Park Rangers 2-2 Reading
23 Feb 2019 > Reading 1-1 Rotherham United
22 Sep 2018 > Reading 3-0 Hull City
21 Apr 2018 > Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Reading
14 Oct 2017 > Leeds United 0-1 Reading
31 Jan 2017 > Birmingham City 0-1 Reading
17 Dec 2016 > Blackburn Rovers 2-3 Reading
09 Sep 2016 > Reading 2-1 Ipswich Town (managed to book 9 players)
16 Apr 2016 > Leeds United 3-2 Reading
09 Jan 2016 > Huddersfield Town 2-2 Reading (FA Cup 3)
20 Oct 2015 > Rotherham United 1-1 Reading

Historically

The playing record is better than you'd expect for an awkward long trek up north. Of the 23 league seasons shared (all since 1976) Reading have managed 9 wins to Huddersfield's 11. However Reading have lost 3 of the last 4 league trips to Huddersfield.

How to follow the game

  1. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  2. Ring/text a mate for updates
  3. Use an iFollow subscription
  4. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Swift has to start and Semedo benched. Looked an actual threat once Swift was on tonight.

Would be reluctant to drop a back four that’s just kept a clean sheet at a top side, even if perhaps they should have scored

Rafael

Esteves
Holmes
Morrison
McIntyre

Laurent
Rinomhota

Olise
Swift
Richards

Baldock

Southwood Watson Dorsett East Semedo Aluko Ejaria Melvin Lambert Joao (Bristow if not fit)

Maybe 5-3-2 against Huddersfield:

Rafael

Esteves
Holmes
Morrision
McIntyre
Richards

Laurant
Swift
Ejaria

Olise
Baldock

Holmes, Morrision, McIntyre as a back three, Esteves and Richards as wing backs. Laurant as the holding midfielder with Swift and Ejaria in the center. And play Olise up front with Baldock and see what happens.

However, VP seems pretty rigid with his prefered 4-2-3-1 formation. Playing 5-3-2 allows us to use both Richards and McIntyre who has played well the last two games and doesn't deserve to be dropped.

Unless anyone comes back from injury I would go with the same team. I doubt Swift and Richards are fit enough to play the 90 and by starting them it sticks Pauno into having to use 2 subs.

I remember Tommy Elphick's league debut. Dave Kitson hat trick IIRC.

Can you guys not see there's a full XI there with Richards at LB or something?

Not on mobile. Richards is cut off because the pages aren't big enough

Not the usual Saturday full of excitement ahead of our game at Huddersfield?

Will be watching on i-follow as usual (kinda getting used to this Saturday afternoon indoors routine after most of my life not being at home on matchdays).

Having not seen Esteves, Laurent or Semedo in the flesh it has been difficult assessing them just by TV coverage which of course just follows the ball.

Laurent, as other posters have said, looks a real player but we don't really know how good his positional sense is.
Esteves looks like a more forward type of player than a full-back.
Semedo-hardly get to notice him unless he has a run with the ball.

One day perhaps we will all get to see them play and more readily make up our minds about their ability as TV can only give an idea of how a player is performing .
It is obvious when a striker scores or a keeper makes a save but the all-round play of others (including strikers making runs) is impossible to appreciate fully.
That's why TV, try as it does, can only give a snapshot of events in games and just cannot replace the real thing.

Having said that, I am glad that we have i-follow, despite its faults and commentators, providing something to keep our interest in these difficult times.

Looks like Puscas has travelled for the game, along with Joao and Richards so much we could be starting to see a much better bench from here at the very least.

This really is promising. Can't even remember the last game we had decent attacking options on the pitch let alone bench.

Pic of him on twitter on the pitch - maybe on the bench today?
