1970 is folklore.

Banks injured, Bonetti in.

2-0 up, our best players substituted

Lost 3-2.

I was 9, but remember it.

LUX I am delighted about last night, but 50 years or thereabouts of supporting England

I believe the unit of measurement for supporting England is 'of hurts'

This is true, but surely there must have been a honeymoon glory period after winning the World Cup where there was no hurt, only joy and celebration

I assume there was no time for reflecting in glory back then as they were straight back down the pit, into the working mens clubs and home to mercilessly beat their wives.

Absolutely agree about Grealish for Trippier.Southgate will not leave out either of his CDM s.Last night it struck me how laboured Rice was in his running, and how he and Phillips were out of the game for long periods. The Germans with some astute passes just played through them and took them out of the game.Lets not kid ourselves the Germans were controlling the game up to when we scored .
That said Pickford has kept us in the tournament and the back three were excellent. As was Shaw,Sterling (bar that horror pass) and Saka.TBF I was screaming for Kane to be taken off as he was clearly labouring;but his body adjustment for the header was pure class. It is amazing how deep our talent pool is,when you consider we are not even using Mount,Foden,Sancho and Bellingham.Any Man U fan will tell you Rashford should not even be there,as he is absolutely shot.

I think this might be the worst analysis I have ever seen, well done.

It is an odd analysis as just before England scored they were dominating possession in Germany’s half. Whilst chances were not being created it was England in control and it felt like a goal was coming.

In the 2nd half, until England scored, they had little possession. But Germany were doing absolutely nothing with it. Almost nothing was happening in the match whatsoever. But England were not in control, they didnt have the ball. There just wasnt any danger.

When Grealish came on it opened up. Between 25 and 75 minutes england did not have a shot on goal. So i have read.

What a team England had then
What a terrible turn around. First (Of many) mental scars from England games!

And every game I ever played after watching that I was never complacent at 2 0 up

PieEater Been looking at the ticket site and some for the semi are coming up for sale, but they are CAT1 and priced at 595Euro :o Final tickets are 945Euro

The UEFA approach to limiting capacity is to stop selling "cheaper" CAT3 tickets, even if they come up for the semi I'm not sure I'd pay 195E to sit in the top tier at Wembley.

Has this been and gone?

I don’t agree with the possession bit particularly leading up to the first goal.

Sir Alf really fcuked up the substitutions. He took off Bobby Charlton at 2-0 with a view to resting him for the semi-final, which allowed Beckenbauer to boss the midfield. Germany brought on winger Jurgen Grabowski and he ran England ragged. It was his cross that was headed back by Seeler for Muller to score the winner.

Yep in the heat of Mexico. The cat took a lot of the blame for the defeat which seemed harsh but that was a stylish England team.

My wife's uncle was lucky enough to have 66 as his earliest England memories, but still insists today that our team in 1970 was better and rightful favourites to defend the crown. The hurt basically started that day and has never ended since.

Poor Jeff Astle, that incredible miss against Brazil for many, was all he will be remembered for......I know the offside goal against Leeds is up there but it's always that miss that comes to the mind first for many......

NathStPaul See Grealish in for Saka and Henderson in for Rice. Rest stays the same imo.

I'd go back to 4-2-3-1, yesterday's formation was with the intention of negating Kimmich and Gosens, which it did very effectively. So I'd bring Grealish back in for Trippier.

Agreed with dropping one of Rice or Phillips; we can cope if one gets a 2nd yellow, but not both.

EDIT: completely agree about Rashford. Should have not gone and got the surgery done

Sanguine Interesting point made in the Guardian that with both Rice and Phillips on yellows, we can expect Henderson to start against Ukraine, which might not be the worst thing anyway. Foden also on a yellow, but I hope he makes an appearance.

would obvs lol if they did rest one and we lost

My years of hurt began when I saw Germany knocked out by Bulgaria in 94.

The hurt was suspended when they won Euro 96.

The hurt restarted when they didn't win in 98, 2000, 2002, 2004.

Hosting in 2006 and reaching the semi final didn't really hurt as the team was massively overachieving to reach the semis.

2008, 2010, 2012 hurt with all the Spanish dominance.

2014 the hurt stopped because we won the world cup.

Then it returned up to now.

So not too many years of hurt.

Around 20 years of hurts I'd say.

Enjoying the false narrative developing that our midfield was overrun by Germany. There's a reason that Germany did pretty much fcuk all with their possession.

Yeah, seen a lot of people say that England were dominated. I feel like I watched a different match to them.
